JESSE JACKSON TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS GEORGIA DEATH ROW CASE AGAINST TROY DAVIS

ATLANTA — The Rev. Jesse Jackson is planning to meet with Georgia pardons officials to discuss the case against Troy Davis, who faces the death penalty in connection with the slaying of a Savannah police officer more than two decades ago.

State Sen. Donzella James, D-College Park, said she will also urge the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to review the case.

Davis was sentenced to death for the 1989 slaying of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.

The U.S. Supreme Court in March rejected Davis' appeal. Davis had been given a rare chance to argue his innocence but failed to convince a federal judge he was wrongly convicted, clearing the way for state authorities to proceed with plans for his execution.
