--MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG , co-chair of the Partnership for a New American Economy, will deliver a speech on immigration reform before the Council on Foreign Relations, imploring federal lawmakers to focus on achievable reforms that could have an immediate impact on the nation's economy. From his prepared remarks: "We will not remain a global superpower if we continue to close our doors to people who want to come here to work hard, start businesses, and pursue the American dream.

The American dream cannot survive if we keep telling the dreamers to go elsewhere. ... It's what I call national suicide - and that's not hyperbole. Every day that we fail to fix our broken immigration laws is a day that we inflict a wound on our economy. ... Maybe more than any other major issue in Washington today, there is an opportunity for a bipartisan breakthrough on immigration."

Mayor Bloomberg will also use the speech to highlight a report being released by the Partnership for a New American Economy that looks at the impact of immigrants on one major section of the American economy: Fortune 500 companies. The report finds that a large percentage of Fortune 500 companies were founded by an immigrant - or by a child of immigrants. The Partnership for a New American Economy brings together a bipartisan group of mayors from across the country and business leaders from all sectors of the economy to raise awareness of the economic benefits of sensible immigration reform.
