Supporting marriage in New York--and your marriage
It's been a critical week in New York where the state Senate continued to debate the same-s*x marriage bill passed by the state Assembly last week. At stake is the definition of marriage in one of the nation's most populous and influential states—and each day that the debate continues is a small victory for traditional marriage.
In spite of intense public debate over same-s*x marriage, Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the legislative session earlier this week to force a vote on this issue. Unfortunately, five previously pro-marriage senators changed their minds last week, announcing that they would vote for same-s*x marriage after all. Even with the odds stacked against marriage advocates, a vote on the bill has yet to come because of the considerable pressure from pro-family advocates like you—New Yorkers making their voices heard as well as concerned citizens in the other 49 states praying for God's design for marriage—as the union of a man and a woman—to be upheld.
While we pray for a resounding victory in New York, Focus on the Family remains committed to upholding marriage and urging men and women to engage the culture in its defense—just as we've seen 31 states already uphold marriage at the ballot box. It's important to realize that the impact of same-s*x marriage is not limited to the states where it is legalized—it impacts the rest of the nation, as well. When a government legalizes same-s*x marriage, it declares that motherless or fatherless homes are the same as one with a married mom and dad—and social science research confirms that's simply not the case for kids' wellbeing. As pro-family Americans who understand that kids need both a mom and a dad, it is our role to engage the culture on behalf of the needs of kids.
