MELISSA HARRIS PERRY EXPLAINS THE "HAIR ON FIRE" FIGHT ON THE WEALTH GAP: FAMILY FINANCES VS. GOVT. SPENDING

THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW, July 27, 2011--Melissa Harris-Perry, the MSNBC contributor who guest-hosted for Rachel Maddow on Tuesday, broke down the so-called "wealth gap" for her viewers in a lengthy segment.

On Tuesday morning, the Pew Research Center released a report showing that the gap between the median wealth of white households and those in communities of color was at historic highs. Harris-Perry used the report to dismiss a favored Washington concept: that the government should act like an average family when it deals with its budget.

"Just today, we got a really clear picture of what American household budgets actually do look like, and it is not good," she said. "So, OK, Republicans, let's do it. Let's take a look at what an American household kitchen table budget looks like and let's stop with the make believe." Harris-Perry pointed out that, far from being a model for D.C., many Americans' budgets are in deep trouble due to their level of debt. That debt, and the severe lack of wealth in many black and Latino families, is a direct result of government policy and American history, she said.

"Initially, many black people in America could not own property because they were property," she said, taking viewers through the various means of legal segregation and discrimination that prevented black people from amassing wealth throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

"If you are shut out at the beginning, it is nearly impossible to catch up later on," Harris-Perry said. She concluded:

"As people of color become a proportionally bigger part of the American population, our national coffers will rely on them even more. We cannot pay off the national debt if households cannot pay off their personal debt, and if they are in debt, then you can't cut enough to ever make it possible to fix our government’s debt problems, and particularly not if you refuse to tax that one group whose wealth is still tick, tick, ticking up."

This is one of the clearest descriptions of the national economic crisis I have heard.

It is worth taking the time to listen.

Thank you, Irma.

This was such a clear explanation of what is going on--she is also a teacher--that I found amazing.

I would love for folks to pay attention.

I would love to see Melissa Harris Perry with her own show--I don't think that is going to happen because it may mean that she will have to leave teaching. But what she has to say is tremendously worthwhile.

Yes Rich, it is such a blessing for us to now have so many actual people who are public school educators more interested in providing resources to help us become more secure as a nation than only providing by way of our public airwaves those to keep us ignorant therefore less able to be secure and comfortable being proud of who we are as we try to become better mentally and financially while still making this a moral, caring nation at the same time.(smile)

thanks Rich, myfavorite public school teacher. lol

Yes Rich, simple, common sense and facts seem to be of no interest any more as there is not room to finger point blame, example...

THE BILL IN THE HOUSE CAN NOT BE RITIFIED BY 2 THRIDS OF THE 50 STATES IN A WEEK THEREFORE IT IS JUST TRYING TO RUN OUT THE CLOCK AND HELP THE TEPARTY ACTUALLY BECOME MORE POWERFUL THAN THE REPUBLICANS....but who has been taught this fact as it would over rule all of theiR political norms, but thankfully no longer accepted by those in this voter's second look movement to recall those of this mind set they mistakenly voted in to office to represent their local needs like schools, teachers, police, firemen and lets not forget jobs that will move us back to MADE IN AMERICA LABELS ON PRODUCTS EVEN THE FOODS WE EAT...

YES WE CAN...YES WE ARE...BEGINING TO EDUCATE!!!EDUCATE!!!EDUCATE!!! (S-M-I-L-E)
