How Much $$$ a Presidential Candidate Raises is a Measuring Stick for Party Nomination & the Next President
The current candidates for president in 2012 have all done fairly well in terms of raising money in the second quarter. President Obama leads the pack with, yet another record-breaking amount, $86 million. As for the republican candidates, here is a list of how they fared in Q2:
Mitt Romney leads all republican candidates with $18.3 million
Ron Paul raised $4.5 million
Tim Pawlenty raised $4.2 million
Jon Huntsman raised $4.1 million (including $2 million of his own money)
Herman Cain raised $2.5 million
Newt Gingrich raised $2 million
Rick Santorum raised less then $2 million
and the other republican candidates, including Michele Bachmann, have not yet released their earnings
Based solely on the funds raised it’s clear that Romney is the front runner followed by Ron Paul. It will be interesting to see how the fundraising progresses as we get closer to election day.
A few questions to our readers:
Do you think that Mitt Romney will be able to raise the $50 million he hopes to raise for the primaries?
What do you think about President Obama wanting to raise $1 billion to support his bid for re-election?

Raising and spending a lot of money doesn’t necessary guarantee victory. Just ask Meg Whitman who spent more then $160 million, most of it her own money, in her unsuccessful attempt bid to be come Governor of California.
Other notable candidacies that spent large sums of money and resulted in a loss are:
Linda McMahon (R-Conn.): $46.7 million
Jeff Greene (D-Fla.): $23.8 million
Carly Fiorina (R-Calif.): $17.9 million
Ron Johnson (R-Wis.): $10.6 million
William H. Binnie (R-NH.): $7.8 million
Of course we also can’t forget Ross Perot who spend $65.4 million of his own money during the 1992 presidential election. Although Perot did receive nearly 20 million votes, about 19% of the popular vote, he failed to win a single state in the Electoral College.
