i MENTIONED MY BROTHER COW as in my friend Rich who is the author of a great book about the life of some slaves. Sure Rich's book "ON TH WINGS OF THE WIND" is fiction, but it puropse is the same as those words put to paper of the chatel slaves was about what was going on in the social lives, plantations, towns they live and how they used what they had to do what the goals of their lives were which was to protect, take care of each other especially the little one no matter what and see that they suffered less than their parents did and to give and to demand respect especially for the adults.

robert, that is a wondeerful question and one that I have never given any thought to."I" would say that the extended family grand mother, all of them would be my hero.They would be the safe habor for from her master, his wife and their children to her own natural birth children and those she helped bring into the world of the young mothers.

These were the true ones who kep th eplantation going during good times and bad times.

You see the tradition was this old wise female was able to retire to her own private home the master always gave her (no not because she was his mistress or any thing like that...they went to her for any and every thing, from a broken heart to a broken foot or are from falling out of a tree.
