Good question Mom...I look at separation of church and state like this:

People go to church or mosque to learn and be reminded of spiritual values and lessons and to hear an inspiring message....the real challenge begins when we step out of the mosque into the "real world". If a person has a greivance-- the minister/pastor may try and sit down with both parties and possibly resolve the issues. THIS IS AN ISSUE DEALT WITH BY THE MOSQUE OR CHURCH.

However, if one or both parties decide to press charges (resulting in either of them going to prison)...then it becomes a legal/state issue involving the police and the courts.THESE ARE ISSUES TO BE DEALT WITH BY THE STATE AND NOT THE CHURCH. After a brother or sister has served their time, they should be allowed acces to the mosque or church and hopefully without people reminding them of their past.

It's just like someone seeking a divorce, if a person is seeking a divorce or a restraining order against their spouse-- he or she must file the appropriate papers with the STATE--now the minister/pastor can offer advice on how to recover from the divorce, however it is not in the minister/pastors right to grant the divorce because it is a STATE/LEGAL issue.

robert, "I" am not a member of the NOI, but I have been to services in the Noi Mosque in Sacramento. Just as "I" will defend your right to free speech, religious choice and am not interest in your s*x life and choose to not be Catholic or to become a Christian after stopping going to MASS...

"I" had Christmas celebrations with my children and celebrate with my child and grand children who so not beleive in nor celebrate any of he things you mentioned and "i" so all of these things because it is my right and my ability to do so...and mainly because "I" only allow into my personal life on a daily, moment by moment basic on actions of my own as this is what makes me happy...and, trying to live another's life does not make me happy...
