High Fructose Corn Syrup: Junk Food for Your Brain (But Omega-3s Are Brain Health Food!)

A new study published in the Journal of Physiology provides more evidence that high fructose corn syrup is the equivalent of “brain junk food”, while omega-3 fatty acids can be considered “brain health food.”

In a preliminary study, researchers at the University of California Los Angeles studied two groups of rats that consumed a fructose solution as drinking water for six weeks. The second group also received omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed oil and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is the primary essential fatty acid in the human brain. It is crucial for synaptic function and affects numerous functions including learning and memory.

The rats were fed a standard diet and trained on a maze twice daily for five days before starting the experimental diet. The researchers tested how well the rats were able to navigate the maze, which contained numerous holes but only one exit. Placed within the maze were visual landmarks to help the rats learn and remember the way.

Six weeks later, the researchers tested the rats’ ability to recall the route and escape the maze. The results were surprising:

The group that received DHA omega-3s navigated the maze much faster than the group that did not receive omega 3s.
The DHA-deprived rats were slower and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity. These animals also developed signs of resistance to insulin, which plays a key role in memory and learning. (Note that insulin is also a key regulator of blood sugar).
Conclusion

Although it is a preliminary, non-human study, this research suggests that eating too much fructose could block insulin’s ability to regulate how cells use and story sugar for the energy required for processing thoughts and emotions. This suggests that a high-fructose diet is harmful not only for your body, but for your brain, too.

Ms. Fountai,/

I understand your support of this article and too supports the article, but here is the twist. As for Black Americans having a healthy brain/is/not good enough because we dont how to use our brains. We can't reason. We are not rational people and that is because we are descendants of slaves, am I right. Our very first teacher must be our first genuine prophet.

Moses was the Children of Israel's first teacher after coming out of 430 years of bondage and
slavery, am I right. Likewise, the same thing must happen for the same way as well. Black Americans must recognize our prophet because he is here.

Heloo Mr. Watley,

I would definitely not agree that Black Americans don't use their brains and are not rational people. I think we have way to much evident against that statement. In fact, I think that mentality is a continuation of the bondage you mention only this time is led by our very own members. Instead of uplifting our people in every possible sense, there are those among us who look to bring another down.

Great and informative article Sister!

High fructose corn syrup is INDEED the equivalent of “brain junk food". It's that high-fructose corn syrup they're putting in the pop and everything else thats making so many people fat. It's nothing but extra concentrated sugar which leads to cancer in the body over time. I have cut back on my soda intake for that reason.

They're putting the corn syrup in all the beverages here in America and Mexico making all the little Black and Hispanic children fat, but you go to Canada and they don't even allow that stuff to be used. It's considered poison over there.

Diet, regular, or zero calorie, sodas will fatten you up quick! And just because we may see soda pop sold in Health/Whole Food Stores doesn't mean they are 100% healthy. Read the ingredients on the can and you'll see what I'm talking about. SUGAR-galore!!!

The schools promote and sell sodas to students! They do it for the money. This scheming is laid out in a book called "Fast Food Nation" which my younger brother hipped me to. I HIGHLY recommend it!

P.S. Harry, please sit yourself down somewhere for God's sake...
