David this is an excellent question to build on and a refreshing positive dialogue for a change brother thank you. Here's my short take:
When we pray, we are either asking Allah or thanking Allah for something. Since the word 'prayer' derives from the Middle English word 'preiere' which means the act of worship or practice, this is what will bring the answers to what it is we or others have prayed for before us.
Allah has already put the answers to our prayers out, we must go into motion in a practice way and that motion will lead us to the answers to our prayers. This is meant by Allah helps those who help themselves. By Allah being the all knower, He had to know what we needed before we knew. Simply putting it Allah knows what's in our hearts.
Allah always prepares for what we need well in advance ... the benificent, take nature for example. A baby is conceived and nine months later the baby has what it needs from the mother already proportioned and at the right temperature...its formula (breastmilk).
And since we are to come to Allah like a baby (submissive) what is our formula to nourish us to grow properly? It has to be mathematical thinking, coming up with the absolute answers to all questions, problems of life or situations, without putting a person to it. This is the formula to tapping into the god within, submission is the key.
Prayers are like the secret to your survival. I once read that the pen is mightier than the sword, and every since then I have written a prayers down on paper and carried it. It was first done as an act of faith, until I started placing the prayer on me while I slept. I recognized that the nightmares stop happening. I still have a problem with finances but my dreams are like supernatural.(smile)
I pray for many things.

Honesty and Courage?
@David, a NDBuddhist prayer can in no way be compared to a Christian prayer or the average formal religion. example, We NDB have limitless powers, we believe what we have, do, don't do comes from in side of us and not out side of us...
we are not to serve our religion, philosophy, but it is to serve us. (smile)
"I" will print on Bia one day our prayer that we say each day, twice a day...we chant at any itme which is also a form of prayer or a way of calling on our own powers to over come obsticles. (smile)
My prayer says we are all God's children and God did not screw up when he made mankind therefore we must always pray for unity, peace on earth and respect for those who (yes included inour prayer isa prayer for the dead) came before us in their efforts to make tis world a better place then they found it in bringing happines to A-L-L by way o the individual being a role model...
and, your prayer? (smile)
...and, "I" believe the most important thing about our prayer is that after pryaing we get up and do every thing in our prayer to make it a reality, because it is on us to do this...
We have the unlimited powers to do this. (smile)

I pray most of all because I love Jesus. Other times, I pray for others, and I pray as it is my communication with God; where all my thoughts and requests are known to him.
In praise, and in thanksgiving. Prayers are a significant part of my day to life, and I pray without ceasing in all matters which I encounter along every issue in my life.
My God!, My Good God! I love to pray to my God! Amen.
