President Obama on Tuesday warned supporters about complacency at a New York City fundraiser hosted by Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Obama told the group of about 100 donors at a 40/40 Club not to be discouraged and to “make history” over the next 49 days by helping him win reelection.

"I don't want people to be complacent, but I don't want people to be discouraged," Obama said. "We're on the brink of an election, but more importantly, we're on the brink of moving America in a direction where we're going to be more just, more fair. The economy's going to grow in a way that includes everybody, an America that's respected around the world, because we're putting forward our best values and our best ideals.

"We've made history in the past and we're going to make history in the next seven weeks," Obama added to the donors, who paid $40,000 to attend the affair.

The fundraiser was one of two donor events Obama attended Tuesday night in the Big Apple. He also taped an appearance on the "Late Show With David Letterman" during the visit.

During his remarks, Obama praised Beyonce, saying she "could not be a better role model" for his daughters, Malia and Sasha. He also mentioned that he and Jay-Z have developed a friendship of sorts over the years. "We both have daughters and our wives are more popular than we are," Obama said. "So, you know, we've got a little bond there. It's hard but it's OK.

I know it--I happened to riding on a bus in downtown Manhattan that night and got caught in all the traffic. But I knew it was for a good cause so all I did was smile to myself.
