Journalism has developed a variety of ethics and standards. While objectivity and a lack of bias are often considered important, some types of journalism, such as advocacy journalism, intentionally adopt a non-objective viewpoint.

Advocacy journalism is a genre of journalism that intentionally and transparently adopts a non-objective viewpoint, usually for some social or political purpose. Because it is intended to be factual, it is distinguished from propaganda. It is also distinct from instances of media bias and failures of objectivity in media outlets, which attempt to be—or which present themselves as—objective or neutral.

Traditionally, advocacy and criticism are restricted to editorial and op-ed pages, which are clearly distinguished in the publication and in the organization's internal structure. News reports are intended to be objective and unbiased. In contrast, advocacy journalists have an opinion about the story they are writing. For example, that political corruption should be punished, that more environmentally friendly practices should be adopted by consumers, or that a government policy will be harmful to business interests and should not be adopted. This may be evident in small ways, such as tone or facial expression, or large ways, such as the selection of facts and opinions presented.

Some advocacy journalists reject that the traditional ideal of objectivity is possible in practice, either generally, or due to the presence of corporate sponsors in advertising. Some feel that the public interest is better served by a diversity of media outlets with a variety of transparent points of view, or that advocacy journalism serves a similar role to muckrakers or whistleblowers.

Irma, I'm not so concerned about the issue itself as much as about the media at this point. It seems what we have is two camps of advocacy journalists, one for the liberals/left-wing/Democrats, one for the conservative/right-wing/Republicans. We've got two nice tidy pigeonholes to put everyone and everything into. That's not the way everyone is though. And having two opposing camps of journalists isn't the same thing as fair and balanced reporting.

I can be a Buddhist and a member of the NRA at the same time. Liberal on some issues and conservative on others. I really can't stomach any of the guys, except I do like Al Sharpton a lot.

Sorry about that Irma, but Diane Feinstein's bill has been introduced and it is absolutely horrendous. It goes far beyond preventing what happened at Sandy Hook.

If her bill is passed there will be a huge backlash in 2014. The NRA has 4.5 million members and the NAGR 1.5 million, but there are 90 million gun owners in this country.

I'm not against reasonable amendments to the law to protect our children. They should have had a better bill to consider than Feinstein's. But her's is the one that's been introduced.

Whenever I need happy, secure and content I turn to the daimoku. But when I put it down and watch this video I'm not yet able to avoid traveling to a lower world. I'll keep practicing. I really don't care much about gun myself. But I have to take a stand for my children and grandchildren, and yes my grandson is in kindergarten.
