Texas Southern University has entered into a significant agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)- Region 6, that will help train qualified professionals in environmental policy, economics, and several areas of science, business and technology.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will focus on bringing innovative strategies to the forefront to assure an adequate supply of highly trained and skilled personnel for the accomplishment of environmental research, policy and program development.

TSU’s recognized researcher, Dr. Robert Bullard, Dean of the Barbara Jordan/Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, will lead this initiative for Texas Southern. Bullard is known the world over as the “Father of Environmental Justice”. Bullard and TSU’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Sunny Ohia, signed the agreement April 10th on campus.

“This is an exciting moment for Texas Southern University and The EPA-Region 6,” Bullard stated. “Texas Southern’s capacity to develop environmental specialists for potential EPA employment will be significantly enhanced while important contributions also will be made to EPA’s overall research and development programs,” he added.

This MOU builds upon the previous collaborations between Texas Southern and EPA- Region 6. It is intended to provide a significant positive impact on the following areas:

- Improve the quality of environmental science and TSU’s technical education;
- Increase the relevance of Texas Southern’s research projects and other work to EPA’s environmental and public health missions; and
- Increase the number of culturally diverse students electing to pursue graduate study and research careers in areas including environmental policy, science and technology and engineering and mathematics.
