BRUSSELS, July 18 (RIA Novosti) – The European Commission does not know on what basis the United States concluded that a Malaysian Airlines passenger plane, which crashed in eastern Ukraine, was shot down by a missile, a source in the EC told RIA Novosti on Friday.
"One must ask them. The European Commission does not have the data of where the US got the information that was reproduced by mass media," the EC representative said.
A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed near the town of Torez in the Donetsk Region on Thursday, causing death of all 283 passengers and 15 crew members on board.
Citing US intelligence agencies, Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Friday that the flight MH17 had been brought down by a missile.
According to the newspaper, intelligence agencies had said witnesses reported a plume of smoke rising over the crash site. They did not comment on whether the missile was launched by the Kiev-backed troops or independence supporters in the region, but said it was a surface-to-air missile.
Kiev blamed independence supporters in the turbulent Donetsk Region for downing the passenger plane with a surface-to-air missile. Militia forces said they had no missile systems that could hit a target flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters.

Okay the burden of proof will come from Ukraine's illegal government versus the Russian Federation that has the best military and space technology in the world.
The Duma President (Russian Parliament)and Putin stated that the fingerprint is on the Kiev government shoulders.
If this was a missile the plane had to be flying at an altitude of least 30,000 feet.
The Russian shoulder-fired missiles cannot ascend to that level and every military attaché knows this.
So we can discount that.
Secondarily there is absolutely no proof at all that a missile was fired from the Russian border and no intent because the Malaysian government is one of Moscow's top clients for purchases of MIG/Sukhoi advanced warplanes.
The Malaysian government would never utter any direct involvement of the Russian government or military.
The Russian top military officials have the complete radar signatures of the flight over Ukrainian territory.
This was stated in all major Russian media outlets not on CNN and the other American outlets?????????????
Ukraine does not have the technology to provide proof regarding that because the Russian Glasnoss satellite system is not second to any global navigational system on earth.
The Russian space satellites are so advanced they can record visuals of printed words on a car license plate.
The Americans will have to prove that they have better visual documentation versus Russia, this will be dismissed by every government in the world.
Obama will not go down that road. He will run in the UN and have John McCain make his wild accusations against Putin.
It will all be done in private and Obama will crawl in his usual corner of silence.
I would like to note if the Americans have satellite proof that Russia sold the "BUK" anti-aircraft missile system that Russia manufacturers not Ukraine or the "Yahont" the fastest low flying cruise missile in the world.
No proof of that either!
What Obama fears that the Russian Federation military will release the radar signature tracking the plane destination over the Ukrainian territory just 60 km from the Russian border.
Plus Russia has satellite photos of the "BUK" missile system being deployed by the Ukrainian Army over three weeks ago in Donetsk.
The so-called Donetsk rebels are kicking the Ukrainian butts real good. They have downed two Antonov military transport planes, several SU-25 attack aircraft and now America is selling the Kiev military bull-proof vests as the casualty mount for the Ukrainian army.
Russia has not sold the real advanced stuff and if they did Porky the President of Ukraine would not be able to sleep at night because a low-flying "Yahont" or advanced Russian missile with "plasma Technology" would not be visible on radar traveling over three times the speed of sound for a distance of about 300 miles from Donetsk or Lugansk.
That would be the final end of the Ukrainian "Chocolate King" President, so Putin and the Russian military is showing more compassion than I would.

Trust me the European Union will lead the investigation and the Americans will try to apply pressure for blaming Moscow indirectly to no avail.
That is what Obama's press conference was all about today.
Because the Americans just don't have the proof and the embattled US President needs to help fix the sinking economy at home.
