The Ukrainian army tried to approach the city from two sides, the press service of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic said.
LUGANSK, July 19 /ITAR-TASS/. Militia fought off the Ukrainian army offensive in the eastern city of Luhansk on Saturday, July 19, causing the government troops to sustain heavy losses both in manpower and materiel, the press service of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) said.

“In the first half of the day July 19 active fighting took place in the vicinity of Luhansk. The Ukrainian army tried to approach the city from two sides… apparently facing two tasks: to cut off the road to Donetsk and unblock the airport. In both directions, the aggressor was fought off by the LNR units… as a result, the enemy sustained serious losses both in manpower and materiel, retreating from its positions,” the press service said.
About 11:00 local time, Ukrainian Air Force helicopters fired at the militia positions near the town of Aleksandrovsk but “the missiles missed the target”, the press service said.
It said the Ukrainian army’s artillery fire had practically destroyed the village of Popasnoye. Its residents “are hiding in the cellars to avoid sniper fire”.
The army also conducted fire in Severodonetsk and Lisichansk.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Valery Geletei earlier reported to President Pyotr Poroshenko that the army had taken the south-eastern part of Luhansk and its airport under control.
However, the LNR press service denied that. “The Ukrainian troops did not take any parts in the south-east of Luhansk. Everyone remains on its previous positions,” it said.

Okay people the Western media is not reporting the fighting correctly in the breakaway Russian speaking provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Why because of mass desertion of Ukrainian soldiers, casualties, and poor moral.
Porky's army just does not have it, why the US administration blames all the woes on Russia helping the so-called rebels in the South-Eastern corridor of Ukraine.
You supplying weapons too, time to man-up!
Well Obama and his administration played the wrong geopolitical card hoping that Russia would invade Ukraine and therefore they would be able to isolate them from their Western European brothers.
But the geopolitical gambit has failed because Russia knew the plans prior to the illegal seizure by the current Nazi Kiev government.
Obama needs to paint Russia's support as an obstacle of America's plans to control Ukraine.
Obama continues to talk about Russia supporting the rebels militarily, you damn right they are just like you did in Libya and Syria.
Yet your allies in Ukraine are getting there asses beat real bad despite the fact that Russia has not supplied them with the most modern convention weapons in their arsenal.
Trust me and everyone knows who has the best military equipment on earth especially missiles.
Continue crying about Russia supplying their Russian speaking brother supplies because it's not going to stop despite your sanction card.
It's going to get worst for the Ukrainian army and that is why they are defecting because why would you fight the rebels when they are being supplied by a nation that has the best military and space technology in the world.
That statement can be backed up by their aircraft, tanks, fifth generation submarines, EMP Super Weapons, Ballistic Missiles, Anti-Aircraft Missile platform, and stationary and mobile Nuclear platforms.
Compare them to any army on earth?
I don't hear the Pentagon claiming any superiority however Russia does on "YOU TUBE" and other internet platforms as well.
The best thing is for Obama and his administration to give up on this charade he has been out-smarted by the Russian Federation once again.
He is looking bad when it comes to foreign affairs his poll ratings are the worst since World War II.
Yet Putin's is at an all time high!
