Steve,
I realize that your blog is probably in response to Harry or some other person but on a side note, Nursing could use a good dose of this in the working environment !!! Its sad the Nursing profession has a Dark Side that people on the outside of the field rarely know about, "Nurses eat their Young", meaning the widespread incivility towards other nurses seen as weak or easy prey.
Just Sunday night, I was met with incivility while working on a unit that I found very difficult because of the patient workload and its no wonder their own regular staff called sick so I as relief staff working through an agency was called into the chaos! Imagine having a dying patient requiring pain medication every 1-2 hrs and family members after you to give that med on top of having to care for 6 other patients. Not only that, none of the staff members lift a finger to help although they are familiar with the patients especially the worst ones that they have given you... as those patients are seen as too, much work?!
By the time I "catch my breath", they are demanding that I do what's called "bum rounds" where nurses team up to go to patients rooms to diaper changes before shift change. I must come NOW, drop my charting and passing morning meds... and go help change all the others nurses' patients dirty diapers ... although they hadn't helped me all night.
When I spoke up to say, "I've heard, I'll be there when I finish what I'm doing" then the nurse in charge is whispering behind my back with her stoogies ... Imagine that?! It's nerve racking at how nurses can be to one another. Yep Nurses could use a healthy dose of Civility into the profession. Thank goodness for me, I was out of there right on the dot of 07:30!!!
