The NOI was never destroyed, Minister Farrakhan stated on several occasions that Elijah Muhammad likened the NOI to a man inside of a boat, who saw a large ship that was sailing toward the boat, and the ship came with intentions to destroy the boat. The man pulled the cork out the bottom of the boat to allow the boat to sink. The man and the boat went under water, and waited for the ship to pass. Once the ship passed the man replaced the cork, and the ship rose to the surface.

The ship was symbolic of the U.S. government's COINTELPRO Intelligence Program. They wanted to destroy every black organization that existed in the 1920s through the 1970's. COINTELPRO, the FBI, and J. Edgar Hoover was determined that no Black Messiah would rise to unite our people in their quest for justice and true liberation. COINTELPRO ALMOST destroyed the NOI, but failed in the attempt because Elijah Muhammad took the neccessary steps to protect the NOI.

COINTELPRO involved not only wiretapping, but attempts to disrupt, discredit, and defame perceived political radicals. Hoover targeted few figures as relentlessly as Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. COINTELPRO was the very reason that MLK and Malcolm were assassinated!!!
