Red-bellied Woodpecker

Red-bellied Woodpecker

For the past couple weeks I've been enjoying the wildlife coming to my bird-feeder. I cleared out a bramble vine that was about 35 feet up into the cypress tree outside the kitchen window and hung a 4' long hook I made a couple years ago and a new bird-feeder. The squirrels can't get to it from the top but the birds leave them plenty on the ground. There's a couple of chipmunks too, doves, cardinals, tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, and a whole lot of other species. I feed them black oil sunflower seeds and they are all over it. The most prominent of the group is a Red-bellied Woodpecker. He collects several seeds at once then takes them to the hardwoods across the street and stores them high up in a tree.

Steve nature has such a beautiful event of wildlife. This woodpecker is a very lovely species & how rare are doves to see in my part of the country. This is splendid!

I was thinking of you Miisrael and the light touches you bring. Do you have any favorite birds?

I love wrens and robins and canaries. The other day I witnessed two mocking birds doing a dance. They were moving and rocking side to side and then they would spread their wings. I don't know if they were male and female or two males making a territorial dance for a female. It was remarkable. I'd never seen birds do dancing before. They danced for at least five minutes.

No canaries up this way but I used to see mockingbirds in CA. The Carolina Wren is one of my favorites, I heard one today but couldn't be sure if I saw it. I need to clean the kitchen windows.

LOL!

As an appreciation for this delightful blog I'll show photos in My Center Peaces of the birds we've mentioned for the remaining of the week. And yes...PLEASE wash your windows soon. SMILES

I've been seeing Downy Woodpeckers and I think Purple Finches. I'm going to set up another feeder outside the back door with a closer view.

You should put up another feeder... I love watching nature from home. So many times it's overlooked and those who take time to notice it is better than any television show in my opinion. :) I used to feed the wrens breadcrumbs. I think I'll do it again this winter.

Another one i finally identified is the White-breasted Nuthatch.

And the American Goldfinch. This one took me a while because the male's plumage is completely different in winter than when breeding. As Harry likes to say, it was a revelation.

Excellent! They are beautiful birds! Your feeder is attracting them... its so enjoyable to bird watch.
The revelation is beauty...

"Oh, I've seen those birds before, but didn't know what they were called." How pretty they are!

Beautiful bird...

I love watching their different behaviors. The finches will mob the feeder and just sit there and chow down. Then Red Belly swoops in and they all scatter. Then the chickadees and titmouses take advantage of the opening - they take the seeds to a branch to eat them. The wrens and juncos feed on the ground with the squirrels who occasionally chase them.

Steve, You are having a marvelous time. . Keep it going! I've started watching more birds too.

I was mistaken about the wrens though we do have them, but what I've been seeing is the White-throated Sparrow.
