DAY 28
DECEMBER 2014
Norman Atlantic Sea Ferry
Near Corfu Italy

Strong winds swept over waters as a ferry fire was at flames and smoke. Although rescue help was readily available, the fire was made difficult to distinguish due the current of wind and choppy sea weather. At least 165 people aboard the ferry were rescued with some 300 others remaining were detained in getting off the burning boat. Those aboard are reported as being mostly Greek, but also included people from Turkey, Albania and Germany along with other nations. The ferry carried at least 478 passengers when it caught fire near north west of Corfu. Exact cause of the fire will be investigated, but was said to have started on the upper deck and spread quickly by windy conditions. Many on board suffered from breathing and inhaling problems caused by heavy thick smoke blown by the winds. In addition to the strong winds, many passengers were stunned by the cold air showed cases of hypothermia. One passenger did perish after jumping off the boat, and another one was seriously injured. Rescue missions were working steadily to save those still aboard at the time of this report.
