The Eighth Duke of Wellington died on December 31, 2014. A spokesman announced his passing before the 200th anniversary of his ancestor's famous victory in the Battle of Waterloo. News sources reported that The Duke of Wellington, Arthur Valerian Wellesley died at the age of 99 at his home surround by his family. A private funeral for the Duke will be held on January 8, 2015. He has also other titles two being The Prince of Waterloo in the Netherlands and Belgium and Duke of Victoria in Portugal.

The marking of the 200th Celebration generates the Battle where the French Emperor Napolean was finally defeated ending 12 years of the Napoleonic Wars. The service for the remembrance of the Battle of Waterloo is scheduled for June 18, 2015 at St. Paul Cathedral where the Duke was going to attend. Before his death the Duke spoke of the importance of marking the victory of Waterloo. and he also stated that the history of Waterloo should not be forgotten. The Duke's eldest son 69 year old , Charles , the Marquess of Douro will now fill shoes of making him the 9th Duke of Wellington.
