“The Negro is America's metaphor”

I would hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo, and if an echo sounded, no matter how faintly, I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of hunger for life that gnaws in us all.

“Men starve from a lack of self-realization as much as they can from a lack of bread.”

“Our too-young and too-new America, lusty because it is lonely, aggressive because it is afraid, insists upon seeing the world in terms of good and bad, the holy and the evil, the high and the low, the white and the black;

our America is frightened of fact, of history, of processes, of necessity.

It hugs the easy way of damning those whom it cannot understand, of excluding those who look different, and it salves its conscience with a self-draped cloak of righteousness”

“It was not a matter of believing or disbelieving what I read, but of feeling something new, of being affected by something that made the look of the world different.”

“Is not life exactly what it ought to be, in a certain sense? Isn't it only the naive who find all of this baffling? If you've a notion of what man's heart is, wouldn't you say that maybe the whole effort of man on earth to build a civilization is simply man's frantic and frightened attempt to hide himself from himself?”

The Greatest American Generation Produced the Likes of Hughes, Wright, Ellison, Baldwin, Marshall...etal

......they Produced the Likes of Poitier, Bellafonte, Holder, MLKing, AbdulMaleek AsShabazz and President Baraaka Hussein Obama............

Richard Nathaniel Wright asserts the "cultural barrenness of black life":

" . . . I used to mull over the strange absence of real kindness in Negroes,

how unstable was our tenderness,
how lacking in genuine passion we were,
how void of great hope,
how timid our joy,
how bare our traditions,
how hollow our memories,
how lacking we were in those intangible sentiments that bind man to man,

and how shallow was even our despair."

"Negroes lead so passionate an existence":

"I saw that what had been taken for our emotional strength was our negative confusions, our flights, our fears, our frenzy under pressure."

It's becoming very much like 1979 again.

The impulse to dream was slowly beaten out of me by experience.

Now it surged up again and I hungered for books, new ways of looking and seeing.

Men can starve from a lack of self-realization as much as they can from a lack of bread.

Men simply copied the realities of their hearts when they built prisons.

I'd like to see the bay cleaned up before I die.

Don't leave inferences to be drawn when evidence can be presented.

I would hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo, and if an echo sounded, no matter how faintly,

I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of hunger for life that gnaws in us all.

The artist must bow to the monster of his own imagination.

I have no religion in the formal sense of the word .... I have no race except that which is forced upon me. I have no country except that to which I'm obliged to belong. I have no traditions. I'm free. I have only the future.

¯ Richard Wright, White Man, Listen!

“Then, first of all, let us admit that there is no such thing as objectivity, no such objective fact as objectivity. Objectivity is a fabricated concept, a synthetic intellectual construction...”

“Hence, there is no such thing as an absolute objectivity of attitude. The most rigorously determined attitude of objectivity is, at best, relative. We are human; we are the slaves of our assumptions, of time and circumstance; we are the victims of our passions and illusions; and the most our critics can ask of us is this: Have you taken your passions, your illusions, your time, and your circumstance into account?”

ALWAYS Our Culture since the slavery InHumanity that grips our Ancestors for 300+ American years

READING has been Our Culture so before the Human Rights History Celebrations and Misconceptions

Let us READ AGAIN...another Invisible man to 2022 American Art/Culture...from the Native Son

*************************************************************************************************************

“I feel that for white America to understand the significance of the problem of the Negro will

take a bigger and tougher America than any we have yet known.

I feel that America's past is too shallow, her national character too superficially optimistic,

her very morality too suffused with color hate for her to accomplish so vast and complex a task.

Culturally the Negro represents a paradox: Though he is an organic part of the nation,

he is excluded by the ride and direction of American culture.

Frankly, it is felt to be right to exclude him, and it if felt to be wrong to admit him freely.

.....if, within the confines of its present culture, the nation ever seeks to purge itself of its color hate,

it will find itself at war with itself, convulsed by a spasm of emotional and moral confusion.

If the nation ever finds itself examining its real relation to the Negro, it will find itself doing infinitely

more than that;

for the anti-Negro attitude of whites represents but a tiny part

- though a symbolically significant one - of the moral attitude of the nation.

Our too-young and too-new America, lusty because it is lonely, aggressive because it is afraid,

insists upon seeing the world in terms of good and bad, the holy and the evil, the high and the low,

the white and the black; our America is frightened of fact, of history, of processes, of necessity.

It hugs the easy way of damning those whom it cannot understand, of excluding those who look different,

and it salves its conscience with a self-draped cloak of righteousness. Am I damning my native land?

No; for I, too, share these faults of character! And I really do not think that America,

adolescent and cocksure, a stranger to suffering and travail, an enemy of passion and sacrifice,

is ready to probe into its most fundamental beliefs.”
