What is Stream of Consciousness in a novel? Wow, this is a tough element of story construction. The dictionary tells us that it is a narrative mode. What? To make it simple it is giving a written equivalent of a character’s thought processes. In other words, what the character is thinking at a particular moment in your book.
For example, a character is at the house of person that is disliked. The author gives the reader a view of how the character feels about the person through this inner monologue that only the reader can hear. Great examples of Stream of consciousness can be found in J.D. Sallinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.
Writing Tip: Practice writing the random thoughts of a person that cruise through his or her mind. Create a situation and let the character react mentally. Create what your character is thinking at that moment. Let your imagination run wild!
