Engaging Legal Advocates in ESSA Implementation

Thursday 2/2/17 at 2pm ET / 11am PT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty recently released Homeless Students Count, a resource that highlights common areas where states need to take aggressive action to come into full compliance with the Education for Homeless Children & Youth Program under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (“McKinney-Vento”). The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015, which reauthorized and amended McKinney-Vento, provides plenty of opportunities for legal advocates to engage with policy makers in their states.

Come join us to learn how legal advocates in Maryland, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Illinois have advocated for the education rights of homeless students. Speakers will identify key priorities in their respective states that others could consider adopting and will also share their experiences working with state and local educational agencies, advocacy strategies, and best practices and recommendations for how to make a positive impact on the education of homeless children and youth.

Participants will get the most out of the webinar if they already have a basic understanding of McKinney-Vento. Read more about McKinney-Vento on our website.

Speakers will include:
•Michael Santos, National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, DC
•Monisha Cherayil, Public Justice Center, MD
•Sujatha Branch, Columbia Legal Services, WA
•Maura McInerney, Education Law Center, PA
•Patricia Nix-Hodes, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, IL
•Rene Heybach, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, IL
•Ruth El, National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, DC
