Mistrust and stigma can prevent African-American parents from seeking help for their children who are affected by ADHD. Rather than recognizing behaviors as signs of ADHD symptoms, parents might instead describe their child as being “bad.”

Cheryl Hamilton, MA, Licensed Professional Counselor, says it’s important for parents to learn more about ADHD to be able to get to the root of the problem. A plan that includes parents, teachers, healthcare professionals can help African-American children succeed when they have ADHD.
