Back on topic, from what I can tell the Dayton shooter bought an AR-15 pistol and added this stabilizer:

The theory is it won't be held to the shoulder. Except for this feature it would be classified as an SBR, a short barrel rifle, that has to be registered under the NFA. Without the stabilizer there is just the buffer tube sticking out.

Don't know if you're familiar with the AR - it breaks down into upper and lower assemblies, that's how Betts hid it in his backpack.
