This is still a world-wide phenomenon that remains largely unrecognized: The extent and distribution of it is largely unknown and, as yet, no formal mechanism exists to record, monitor or respond to such violations. In both Mexico in the United States, there have been a high volume botched exorcisms that have inadvertently turned into satanic rituals. Santa Muerte is a female folk saint whose popularity in Mexico and the United States is spreading rapidly; from being practically unheard of in the year 2000, to being worshiped by 10-12 million people in 2014. Statues and visages of the saint, which appear as a skeleton clad in vibrant robes and carrying a scythe, have popped up all over the world. The religion is popular among a wide variety of people in Mexico, from narco gang members to impoverished farmers, who often pray to the saint for protection. Though Santa Muerte is venerated in the same way as most saints, the Catholic Church has condemned the religion, which of course hasn’t had any effect on its popularity. This death cult is a syncretism or blending of Spanish colonial Catholicism and Aztec beliefs. In his visit to Mexico, Pope Francis denounced the devotion to Santa Muerte, telling the Mexican bishops that he was particularly concerned about “those many persons who, seduced by the empty power of the world, praise illusions and embrace their macabre symbols to commercialize death.”

The President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, has also condemned the cult of the skeleton saint as “sinister and infernal” and called for both Church and society to mobilize against devotion to Saint Death. Many priests have said that even some Mexican cities needed exorcism to cast the evil out. The belief in demonic possession is historically integral to the Christian faith, and the corresponding practice of exorcism is experiencing a modern resurgence. Exorcisms take place more frequently now than ever. The methods of attack vary from exorcist to exorcist. According to their story, “some exorcism involve tying people to chairs and then trying to scream the demons out of them; In others people retch and curse while writhing on the floor.” Some commentators have attributed the increasing demand in exorcisms to what they call the “Pope Francis Effect”, suggesting that the pontiff’s characteristically demon-themed style of rhetoric has reawakened people’s fear of the devil in general and demonic possession in particular. Others point to the growing acceptance of the occult within popular culture. One of the major problems with consulting an exorcist is that, generally speaking, they tend to be individuals with low levels of professional accountability. However, proving that many cops are in the mix with spreading hate speech and racism throughout America, the Center for Investigative Reporting revealed Thursday, June 27, 2019, that they were allowed to download the membership rolls of private Facebook groups. The results were that they found the members of extremist groups and police groups. “We loaded those roughly 1 million names into a database and asked a simple question: How many people were members of at least one extremist group and at least one police group?” the report explained. There were 14,000 hits that surfaced, they said, but they looked at just a mere fraction of the list. That’s when they discovered almost 400 users currently employed as police officers, sheriffs, prison guards or retired law enforcement that were also members of extremist Facebook groups.

Their researchers then tried to join the groups to see what was being said, and it was outright shocking. “Officers engaging in conduct that calls into question their ability to serve their communities without prejudice,” the report revealed. “More than 50 police departments took action or launched internal investigations after we called them with our findings.” They explained that they believed the public should have access to the information and detailed it in their full report. “We started with a list of more than 1,200 extremist groups compiled by Megan Squire, a computer science professor at Elon University and leading expert on extremism on Facebook,” the report detailed their methodology. “Squire, who has been scouring Facebook for extremists for a couple of years, methodically works through the platform, searching for groups with names that denigrate people by race, religion, gender or s*xuality or that contain code words used by extremist movements. And because Facebook recommends new groups based on what Squire searches for, she would find new groups that way, too. When we reviewed the groups, we removed some from the list because we did not believe they met the criteria.” Los Angeles Police Sgt. John Valdez was one of the officers exposed as member of an extremist Facebook group. In 2013, Valdez was involved in a non-fatal shooting of two people.
