Vice President Kamala Harris:
On January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris became the first Black, first South Asian American, and first woman Vice President of the United States. Born in Oakland, California, she paid tribute to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who immigrated to the U.S. from India. Harris is an alumna of Howard University, a historically Black college, and a member of the oldest historically Black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She also served as California’s Attorney General and was elected to the United States Senate for California1.
Poet Amanda Gorman:
At the 59th Presidential Inauguration on January 20, 2021, Amanda Gorman captivated the nation with her original composition, “The Hill We Climb.” At just 22 years old, she became the youngest known inaugural poet. Her eloquent words resonated with President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and the entire nation2.
