Basic Principles of Kwanzaa

Dr. Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966!

The word Kwanzaa comes from the phrase "matunda ya Kwanzaa" which means "first fruits." Kwanzaa's extra "a" evolved as a result of a particular history of the organization US. Dr. Karenga is the Chairman of US.

Kwanzaa is modeled on first fruits celebrations in ancient Africa especially southern African first fruits celebration like Umkhost of Zululand which has seven days.

Kwanzaa has seven basic symbols and two supplemental ones. Each represents values and concepts reflective of African culture and contribution to community building. The basic symbols in Swahili and then in English are:
Mazao (the crops)
Mkeda (the mat)
Kinara (the candle holder)
Mirhindi (the corn)
Mishumaa Saba (the seven candles)
Kikombe cha Umoja (the Unity Cup)
Zawadi (the Gifts)
The two supplemental symbols are:
Bendesa (the Flag), and
Nguzo Saba poster (Poster of the Seven Principles) The Seven Principles are celebrated seven days and each day has a Swahili name of commitment.) Usually in Chicago Kwanzaa's main center of celebration is Malcolm X College! There are events throughout the city as well. I celebrated Kwanzaa last year for the first time and it was wonderful. I will continue to celebrate Kwanzaa because of my commitment to the Prolife Movement! America does not seem to understand the atrocity of celebrating Christmas and doing abortions. Today, 50,000,000 million infants have been aborted in America since 1973 Roe v. Wade Decision! For more in depth information on Kwanzaa go to Dr. Karenga's websites.
