I Hate You...But Not You
As in any family, there are many different kinds of folks. Sadly, in our overall Black family we have a couple of secrets that we don't like to talk about. So I'm calling ya'll out.
Why is it that we fully accept the uncle who touches the kids inappropriately or beats his wife (when he gets drunk)..."because he didn't mean no harm" ... but we HATE the GAY nephew?
Let's understand...we allow the child molesters and wife beaters to participate in the family reunion, but we cast the GAY-male members from the family.
Now I'm not one to say if being GAY is right or wrong...but these are still members of our family. And it gets worst. Now I can't speak for all types or groups of African-American families...but the GAY female parts of our families don't seem to get it as bad.
We know Auntie Faye is GAY...we just don't talk about it. She comes to the house, cooks for the get together...heck she even brings her "friend". But if we think Uncle Ray is GAY he gets a beat down.
I'm not GAY, so I can't speak for the GAY members of our Black in America family, but I think this practice of selected hate is some kind of stupid.
For my family members (my Black in America Family) who I know are going to qoute religious books to me...if God made us all...how do we humans get to decide who he/she/it loves more?
Wasn't the first known Christian crime murder; when one brother killed the other brother because...you don't believe like I believe". Are we still killing family members because they don't follow our view of what God wants?
Again, I'm not asking for a lesson on religion or debate about your faith. I'm just asking us to re-examine how we treat our family members. We are going to need to be able to unify. And there are folks that we need to accept...because like it or not...they are Black in America too.
There has been a lot said about how we were badly portrayed in the CNN special...so how do we want to be seen? Are we one family...or do "I hate you, but not you"?
Let the debates begin....
Isaac,
Thanks for sharing.
P.S. I capitalize to make a point...'cause some folks don't even like to see the word GAY:)
