Are you Afraid of the past?
Many Americans don't know the history of this country? Many Blacks don't know the history of slavery. Is it because we are scared? So how many know their roots since the 1800's. How many know the history of Willie Lynch, Black Codes, and Jim Crow Laws, the civil war or even the Moynihan Report?
How many ever seen a man lynched or wiped? These images should ignite emotions of determination to be more successful and change todays pattern of Homicide mortality. Black men should want to try hard to stay out of jail and raise their family. After what the black race has been through, why do we want to slack in education? After slavery why do we continue to treat each other like rags.
Yeah slavery is old business, but its our evolution into the present and the outcome for the future that Blacks must know about in order to make an effective difference in todays society.
So could it be we are unaware of the past because perhaps we are fearful of the truth?
But realize that the truth will set you free!

I think that it’s not that people are afraid of the past, but they are afraid of the change that is inspired by the past. In spite of the incidence of racial overtones that exist around us, people of color have so many opportunities that were once unavailable to them. To go even one step further, people of color can even qualify for some of those opportunities for no other reason than because of the color of their skin. So, consequently, because of the past and the direction it has taken this country, I think people are really afraid because much more will ultimately be required of them. I came up with a quote years ago that goes like this: “MY GREATEST FEAR IS NOT OF FAILURE; MY GREATEST FEAR IS THAT I WILL SUCCEED, SETTING A STANDARD TO WHICH I SHALL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. I AM AFRAID THAT MY SUCCESS WILL SHINE BRIGHTLY FOR OTHERS TO SEE, AND THAT’S WHAT SCARES ME THE MOST.” You see, that’s what people are really afraid of. It’s okay if you just blend in. But if your actions will put you on top, put you out there where people can see what you are doing and expect you to perform, that terrorizes many people and they would prefer to go along the way things used to be, when nobody cared how they did. That’s the mindset that I believes rests with many people.
