Water

Water

As a child of God,  I sometimes have what I call, desert experiences. I liken it to when I don't drink water for days at a time. I'll subsist on diet colas, juices, coffee, even Kool-aid; everything, but 'pure' straight from the tap Lake Michigan water. Yet it's only when I drink ice cold water that my thirst is truly quenched.

It's the same when I stop reading or hearing the Word of God. It's so very hard to hold on to the promises and presence of God, when I start filling up on the distractions in the world. Before I know it, my very soul starts to feel dry and brittle. I believe God when He says that He will never leave nor forsake me, but when my soul is in that dry place; I'll sometimes wake from sleep in the darkest part of the night, with a feeling of dread and anxiety.  I don't feel God's comforting presence, and even with my husband lying next to me, I still feel so alone.

That's when the proverbial light bulb goes on and I realize I haven't been spending much time with God in prayer or just meditating in his word. Just as my body needs the no-frills but pretty tasty cold glass of Lake Michigan water to help it function properly, so does my spirit needs the Word. Living waters, that heals, restores and nourishes my soul.
