I have been having this discussion with some whites that I know and, of course many of them get it, but racism is really deep. One of my white friends told me that her mother, who has been a life-long democrat, is voting for Mc Cain. She said she can't reason with her, but she is still trying. It is amazing to me that people will just let the house burn down. My concern is that it is so deeply institutionalized that some white folks are simply not aware of their own racism. They are so convinced that what they think is true that there is not real consciousness of the fallacy of it. For those who actually know black people, they believe that an educated, non-violent, "normal" black person, is an exception and not the rule. That quote speaks volumes of why this country needs Barack at the helm. He's obviously a smart, thinking man with a gift of communication and has presented himself as a man of temperament -- the rest of the world is waiting for us to change the face of our leadership. I've learned that many of America's adversaries don't consider us the enemy -- but brothers instead -- b/c they know what we've been through. But polls can be tricky at times. You can poll 10 rednecks and get 10 rednecks responses that don't represent their group as a whole. While there is a LOT of racism out there I've had waaaayyyyy too many dealings w/White people to paint them with a broad brush. And WE must realize more than anything: stereotypes are never put on a group of people that didn't display those similarities more than on a few occasions. Marta Fernandez CUNY -Queens College class of 1985 "1/4 whites attribute 2 negatives to Blacks", and 2/3 say they will vote for Obama. I read this on Yahoo. I thought about it,but decided that even though it's a Stanford study, I was not comfortable with it. The American public has to get on board tech wise..because the figures by the campaign leaders are on the website and cetrtainly if anyone attends an Obama Camp, or training session , they will get the actual figures. I have posted pictures , everytime I attend an Obama event, the visual seen indicates that white Americans are out in droves supporting his campaign. This number of 90 % of Blacks supporting Obama does not necessarily translate well. 90% of what figure? My empirical observation shows that the majority of supporters of Obama are white, Asian and Hispanic. There were 2 Blacks 1 Hispanic and 34 whites, trudging on a Sunday afternoon, thorugh Bristol, Pa to get him elected doing door to door canvassing. The study is skewed by using finite number and mixing them with percentages without fully identifying the ethnic make up of the demographics studied. I was around during Jensen & Shockley's book on his analysis of the inferior intelligence of African Americans as doucmented in his book "The Bell Curve" and he was (Jensen) a professor Emeritus with outstanding credentials, regardless of the "myth" being debunked it permeated white society. So this study to me as a social scientist is poorly controlled statistical data. Obama has to win Pensylvania. And America has never been good when it comes to people who are nonwhite. America must live up to her words that all men are created equal. And stop treating black people like 5th class citizens. America must develop the will to give true freedom to all of it's citizens not just in words but in deeds and we have to be strong enough to call us and them to the carpet when we or them is in error. Johnny Watson Insurance collector at CVS/ Caremark Hi Karen great post, we all know that by the year 2008 wear America should be, but unfortunately we can see we are still not there yet, what was sad to hear was that it There were 2 Blacks 1 Hispanic and 34 whites going door to door for this campaign, don't you think that the whites that are supporters of this campaign are wondering were we are? Things like that fuel those negative stereotypes. we need to show America a new look, that's what Barack did. Let’s show them that we are educated, ambitious, and capable Human beings, who are willing to take our own destiny by the horns. I am asking everyone I know to vote for Barack. if nothing else, they can say the African American community was there for him 100%. Think of all the people you know -- your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors. What if every one of them voted on Election Day? We have to do this people. maybe some of them will not vote this time around because they can't bring themselves to put a black man in office, but as for me and my house we will not regret pulling that handle down for Barack, I encourage you all to do the same. Vanessa Phillips If Barack does not win the White House or come very very close, it will be proof positive that racism still continues to exist in this country and that black achievement means nothing to racist whites and that the whites are indeed willing to watch the house burn down rather than want a change. Hiowever, it is hightime that we address the glaring absence of this nations African-American leaders...Where's Bill Cosby? Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Jesse...(well that's another story), Charles Rangle, Maxine Waters, Andrew Young...(okay I give up..was'nt it Andrew that said that, " Bill Clinton is "Blacker" than Barack because he had slept with more Black Women"...we are in trouble. Where's Russell Simmons and P.Diddy? Conspicuously absent is the profound impact of African-Americans, those who have so-called "made it". Bob Johnson...(shame on him), He attempted to allude the fact to all America that Barack is sort of...well you know the story. My point is that we must send a strong message to our own that we won't tolerate the sell outs'. Let's BOYCOTT AIR JORDANS / MAGIC JOHNSON THEATRES etc. BOYCOTT THOSE WHO BOYCOTT US. He may not be in the media, but please know that those who control the media also decide who to give coverage to. I agree about Jordan and Magic, who supported Hillary and especially Bob Johnson who made billions off of the back of black folk and had the audacity to not only feed our children images worse the Birth of Nation but went in the media and besmirched the character of Barack Obama. I have no problem with him supporting Hillary (actually I do), but he could have done that without trying to take down Barack in the process.
