Q&A With Thomasena Martin-Johnson

Why did you start writing poetry?
"To show my students how to do it. Then I got this urge to write down my thought so that I could remember the inspiration. "

Interviewed by Craig Garner 11/09/10

Do you find it scary that Black people don't even care about being African anymore?
"Yes I do. There has to be some debreifing done to clear the mind of all the negtivity we have been taught about Africans. If all you know is what was in the history books and that they sold you into slavery, who would want to identify with that. That was the purpose for the brainwashing. They couldn't have done what they did if they had not with held the truth and provide us with the drug of religion and the great getting up morning."

Interviewed by Christine Govenor 10/30/10

Tell me something interesting that everyone should know about you?
"I'm glad I found you."

Interviewed by powell robert 10/07/10

What one word best describes your outlook on life?
"Freedom and peace."

Interviewed by Ivory Simone 09/20/10

Define ways you to serve others daily?
"I teach and learn!"

Interviewed by MIISRAEL Bride 09/18/10

is jesus a blck man >
"Yes!"

Interviewed by DAVID JOHNSON 09/18/10

What made you choose academia as a source for inner development ?
"Because when I was growing up, that was the avenue for me not to wash white women's dishes and be able to have someone wash mine."

Interviewed by jamal Abraham 08/19/10

If you were banned from the United States and you have to leave today, what country would you go to live in - and why?
"I'm not sure. I need to think bout that. The places i hve been were good experiences but I was a tourist. Baldwin liked France."

About   (request update)
I am special because I still believe that what ever I want to do is possible. I like whom I have become and enjoyed most of the trip to get here. I am semi-retired and plan to fully retire in a few months. I have been in education for 40 + years. I have taught French, Spanish, history and English. I have taught everybody from elementary school to adults. I came through the separate but equal era, through the trials of integration, and this era of post integration. I first attended the University of Kansas and quickly realized that I needed to be some place else. I transfered to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Ok., and graduated with two degrees. I have been to Egypt, Greece, and Mexico and all of the states in the U.S. except seven. I have one son and three grand children. I have written a book of poetry, and I am in the process of writing a novel. I like to do many thing, and I am always looking for new things to do and to experience. As a teacher, I believe that I have made a sizeable impact on my community. I tried to instill a strong desire in my students to strive for the best and not be deterred by obstacles placed before them. I also tried to help them see their own value as a person and to be a proud person of color regardless of what the community at large said about them. I found that teaching them our proud history is the key, and once my students learned their history, that made all the difference. As a professor at an HBCU, I am still on the crusade of opening eyes and minds to develop their potential and not to give up because the road gets a little rocky or filled with potholds. I grew up in an all Black town where we were taught that what ever we wanted to achieve, was posible. Successful role models were all around me; therefore, it was easy to believe that anything was possible. My parents, Mother and Father, never told me that I could not achieve anything regardless of how far reaching the dream. Those values stayed with me and I tried to pass them on to my students through the years. Many of them have made me proud.

I published a book of poetry on the American African and The Native American"s experiences in this land of the free and home of the brave, entitled POST 1863 AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL. "ACROSS CANE RIVER", anovel about the Cane River community is available for purchace at your local bookstore and Amazon.com.
I have published a book of Love poems called "Caught Up midnight Dessert". If you understand Barry White, Etta James and Marvin Gaye, then this book is for you.It is available at your local booktores and Amazon. com.
I am published in International Who's Who in Poetry 2012.

The National Association of Professional Women named me Woman of The Year 2011-2012.

I am listed in Strothmore's Who's Who for 2012 and 2013.

I am listed on the American Registry for 2012 2013.

Sister Thomasena, I'm not looking for anything in paticular as far as material but generally what to have something to add to the blog for solutions and helps to bridge the education disparities in our community.
Tagged by Jen Fad on 10/07/2010
Thanks for your comments to the blog about education, but I want to know what are some resources or websites that African American parents can use to help supplement their children's learning.

Thomasena, I am also concerned about the rest of the world also. But I wish to see to our own population first, kind of like the tell you on the plane, put your own mask on first before assisting others. If we can address the problems of our own country first, correct the disparity in education and create economic prosperity for more of our citizens, we will have the education to stop these hate based wars and more funds available to help our fellow world citizens. I am sending you a friend request, I hope you will accept.
