My Interview Question
What personal achievement are you most proud of ... and why?

Why Are You Concerned About Black America:
My concerns have to do with the unity and well-being of the African-American community. Last year when it became clear to me that Obama would be the next president of the United States, I began to ask myself some probing questions as I tried to absorb the enormity and historical nature of his election. Apart from what his presidency might mean for the world and for this country, I wanted to reflect a moment on how it related to the MLK dream, and what it might mean for the African-American community. Rev. Dr. King would certainly be proud. Great progress has been made. But was the dream all about how a person or community is perceived/evaluated from the outside—by greater society? Or was there another dimension? Could part of the dream have been about how a person or community perceives itself? How does Obama’s election (the first black leader of the free world) impact the African-American community? Do we esteem ourselves any differently? Have any mental shackles been removed? Will we become more unified? That’s the part that remains unclear for the moment. Rev. Jesse Jackson’s notorious media gaffe (when he thought his microphone was turned off)—in which he deliberately refers to Obama using the “N” word—was disturbing. Perhaps Jackson’s verbal slip betrays a negativity just under the surface in the African-American community that still needs to be confronted and addressed. Now that Obama has helped us turn a historical page, it is now time for us to “turn the lens inward” on our community.
