Tell me something interesting that everyone should know about you?
"I'm not sure where you are in your profile photo, Ernestine, but I do notice that everyone pictured is enjoying each others company. What a precious moment; "I" is lost in "us;" "me" takes a back seat to "we." If you should know anything about me, you should know that I treasure such moments. As I write this, it's after hours and I'm alone in my quiet office and it's so dark outside, I can't see the acres of trees that surround me. In five minutes, the lights will automatically shut off on my floor of this building and I'll probably go home rather than turn them back on again. I'm not in a great hurry because there's no one at my house right now. May I offer a word of advice to you�love your family with all your heart and for as long as you're able. Being together is truly the richest blessing you'll ever receive this side of heaven. " Interviewed by Ernestine Standberry 02/09/11

As people of color, are we ready to allow the new president to do his joy without reverting to the crabs in a bucket past?
"Your question reminds me of an art exhibit I saw in Chicago. One of the paintings was that of hundreds of black people trying to climb out of a gigantic wooden barrel. Needless to say, no one made much progress because, as you well know, everyone took his or her turn at pulling the person in front of them back into the morass. The image shocked me because, even though I'm also a conceptual artist, I had never seen an actual depiction of that all too common stereotype of our people. At that moment, I realized just how much work needs to be done to turn this way of thinking around 180 degrees. Will seeing a black man as President of the United States accomplish this? I don't think so. Rather than put all our hope in one man in Washington, D.C., I think we need to instead talk to our neighbor and this time make the conversation a positive one." What would you like to tell anyone about yourself?
"For many years I was a portrait artist. In the process of drawing and painting countless faces, I learned to appreciate the subtle nuances that distinguish one from another and give each its unique character. I also came to understand that the essence of beauty can be pictured, but cannot be articulated. Even the most technical description of the common characteristics that make up the mechanics of beauty, fail to adequately express what beauty is. But one photo, taken with care, and of the right face, says it all. " Interviewed by Viola Dunn-Thigpen 02/09/11

Do you love museums and African American Art?
"As an art student, I "lived" in museums. While traveling abroad, I visited the Louvre in France and the Hermitage in Moscow. There's nothing like seeing the original work. The same holds true for African-American art. For instance, just touching an Elizabeth Catlett wood sculpture in her Harlem studio was an unforgettable experience." Tell me something interesting that everyone should know about you?
"I learned to swim at age 5 and became a lifeguard at 15. Also that year at summer art camp, I drew my first pencil sketch of a professional female model." Interviewed by Sydney Smith 02/01/11

What makes you such a good friend?
"Your profile photo shows you looking through a pair of binoculars. That's a different approach! As you probably know, the word binocular means 'two together' (from the Latin word, 'bini'). Just as such lenses helps one see with greater clarity, good friends are able to help each other see their paths in life with sharper focus, with deeper dimension, and with greater distance than either one friend could see his path alone. So, when the time comes, they are there for each other, they tell the truth to each other, they share their joys together, as they plan for their futures." Interviewed by Kenneth McGee 08/02/10

If you were dying what would be the activity you would want to accomplish before moving on?
"Since I am dying (we all are, actually), the activity I would want to accomplish would be to live each remaining year, month, day, hour, and minute with meaning, purpose, joy, and love for God, myself, and others." Interviewed by Jessica Hughes 06/30/10

	Warren, It's a pleasure to be friends with you. To answer your question, what concerns me most these days? It is the discrepancy between availability of the Internet among Black Americans and White. How can people have equal access to information and the ability to let their voices be heard if they do not have equal access to this technology? For instance, it is very easy to email our representatives, vs. writing or calling. Do you know of any organizations working on this issue? I am getting involved with a local church (Black Baptist) with a Technology Ministry. We can always start on the local level. I am especially concerned with our youth, as they are the future.
