Garvey's storm is brewing. His whirlwind is spinning. His torch burns once again! (1194 hits)

The TAG TEAM Movement is inspired by the vision and accomplishments of Marcus Garvey, perhaps the greatest Black leader in modern Black history. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, originally from Jamaica, moved to Harlem in 1916, where he expanded his United Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.) to over 1,100 chapters in 40 countries around the world. Marcus Garvey united over 6 million Black people in his organization between 1916 and 1926.

Marcus Garvey encouraged Black people to unite together, to be proud, to achieve, to build their own business and to buy from each other. He built factories to make Black products and had over 1,000 Black people employed in his "United Negro Factories Corporation" in New York City alone. His famous words, "Be Black, Buy Black, Build Black, and all else will take care of itself" has become a motto for the TAG TEAM Movement, almost a century later.

Marcus Garvey and the U.N.I.A. held a famous convention in 1920 in New York City, where Black people from countries all over the world met. At that convention, they adopted the red, black and green flag as the official flag of African people all over the world.

Inspired by Marcus Garvey, the TAG TEAM Movement proudly wears the colors red, black and green in its logo and is committed to carrying forward his legacy by moving the global Black community into economic power.

Garvey's storm is brewing. His whirlwind is spinning. Marcus Garvey's torch burns once again.
"BE Black, BUY Black, BUILD Black, and all else will take care of itself." - Marcus Garvey

Thank you for your comments. But the Garvey movement was ended before it could be fulfilled entirely when he was deported. But look at the Black nations that still exist out who followed Garvey's ideologoy. Check out this website http://www.africawithin.com/clarke/impact_... especially the part about the 1945 Pan African Conference. By no means do I want to go back to live in Africa, but the concept of Blacks from around the globe staying united and working together for a common goal is my point.

I agree Irma! When I was in High School, I thought that the only thing Garvey was trying to do was get every Black person to get on a ship and go back to Africa. It was not well into my 30's that I started to do some research on my own, and let me tell you it was not easy to find the truth about Garvey's factories/production company, cruise line and the unity, love and empowerment that he contributed to within the Black Community. Our history is full of great Black men with a dream for their people long before Dr. King, who were thrown under the bus, because of the fear of educating, enlightening and empowering Black people to prosper as a whole.

Mozell o not have time right now to explain about how your-MY false White history of "Black in America" is showing in the question and your answer about Dr. King.Dr. King is directly tied to Marcus Garvey, but you have got to learn your actual African_American history because our culture nor our fight for equality started with Dr. King.It started in the Mother land, Africa as did the Garvey movement.

I am so glad for your comments...this is what Obama will be able to do in continuing to help us learn about being "Black in America".

It is beautiful/priceless as you will learn. This is why I and so many of us are so proud to be from the mother land..there is no obsticle that we as a people can not over come. Fasle teachings about being" Black in America" is the main fight of Obama's now.

for example, I doubt very much if Woopi knows that the way she wears her hair has any thing to do directly with passing on the message of Marcus Garvey. This is the beauty of our voice in so may ways as the value of our worth of a people are to this planet. And, Mozell count your self as one of the greats in our race for sharing you poems with all of us. This is why you sohuld let the site knwo about your book moer than you do(smile) And, never doubt how proud I am(we all ar of you and your work...

I am so proud of you Mozell and everyone of us who use our own gifts to advamce our people. Like my having a University degree in Black history; I can say things like:If the Garvy movement and contributions had ended America would never have had an NAACP..."Black in America" mistaught by the White public education system.Being given a total TRUTH make over by the African-American study department.

C-H-A-N-G-E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(smile)I got my degree in 1992 in 2008, I am 66+...

Darlene this is so great and this is why I keep saying how this site is so important as it gives US a chance to talk to US about US being Black in America first hand.

The garvey movement's foundation-mission statement is stop allowing the White man to stop you empowering your own selves because of the color of your skin.

Now Mozel land all of my people within the sound of our voice on this post by Darlene, do you see how you are a symbol of the Garvey movement. How you are Black leaders but did not know it?You earn a living without the White man's permission. You used your own natural powers/God given talents to accomplish this. Is this not correct???? It is just that simple my people...Wake Up...and I love and respect you all...
