Desensitized (986 hits)

Let me start off by saying that I archive ALL my email at work.

Friday is the anniversary of my birth. I will be putting on something nice because I am also up for some big award at work. There will be a big dinner at some ball room I have never been to. Funny thing is I didn't know I nominated and to make it to the finals...

People are a lot like email. I get hundreds of emails a day at work. Most of the emails, sent out to everyone at the agency, well, I don't read it. I figured if it was important, one of my employees will bring it to my attention. Then I will go to my archive and check it out. I don't permanently delete my email, I just archive it, just in case.

My neighbors are moving away, it really doesn't effect me. Neighbors in foreclosure? Bankruptcy? Just archive that bit of info.

Don't we sometimes treat the people around us like that? We are only interested in what they have to say only if it directly pertains to us. Someone tells you it's raining on their side of town, well, as long as it's sunny on your side, does it really effect you?

I have been archiving the same email for weeks, but last week there was an attachment with names listed, so I decided to open it. Maybe I know some of these people, never once thinking my name would be on it because I was just transferred from one city to this one. First page, no one I know. Second page, I scream out because I saw my name. Now it effects me.

A note from the city auditor tells me a few months ago that my house value dropped, now my neighbors plights directly effect me. Out of the archive they go and back to my mental "in" box, or "concerned" folder.

We should all be concerned about what's in the news and events taking place all around us. I am trying to get better at knowing how to read the signs. It will be a while before I mentally archive again.
