96-0: Fed Audit Passes Senate

UPDATE - 12:10 p.m. - The amendment to open the Fed to a one-time audit of its lending between December 1, 2007 and the present passed 96-0.

Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), the Federal Reserve's most outspoken defender, came out in support of an amendment by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to force transparency on the Federal Reserve. Gregg's surprising support gives the amendment a major boost.

The Sanders amendment began as a reflection of language passed by the House and cosponsored by Reps. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) that would authorize a broad audit of the Fed. In negotiations with Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and officials from the Fed, Sanders scaled back his audit and restricted it to a one-time look at lending activity from December 1, 2007 until the present -- information that the Fed has so far fought to keep from disclosing. It goes further in some respects than the Paul-Grayson measure, in that it mandates the disclosure of recipients of Fed largesse. (Background on the compromise here.)

Even a year ago, it would have been unthinkable to have Judd Gregg and Ron Paul agree on anything having to do with the Fed other than its street address. The momentum behind a Fed audit is an indication of surging populist sentiment and a financial industry on the defensive.

The battle will continue in conference committee negotiations between the House and Senate and will go on after the bill is signed, as backers push for real transparency at the Fed. But prying open the lid just once would represent a remarkable victory of an ideologically diverse, bipartisan coalition against establishment power.

Clzrk, are we really ready for an actual look at our federal government in such a detail and, real world looking ...the little that is being known as never before already has scares the hell out of me...

since it seem that our government is standing on a foundation of greed and dishonesty and lies and cover-ups upon cover- ups...I repeat, are we really ready for this?!? and, I am serious on this!!!(smile)

Clark, I know you know that expression about, 'be careful what you wish for because your wish just may come true'...lol

I fully understand you Clark, my husband times my spending by the hour I spend in a store...

but, also Clark, there is a chance that many of tose guilty will not resign in time for someone else to take their place in Congress and look what a mess we will be in when the warrants go out. lol

Clark, we have the law suits of the oil spill, law suits with the IRS on those in Congress who live and play at C Street while maybe violating our tas laws, the uneeded war in Iraq...torture...home grown terrorist...the FCC allowing Fox to abuse its liscense..Wall Street...and some where oil fixing prices is going to come into this issue...remember how the oil companys said ther prophets were going to REASEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTS?!?

OH WELL, the truth will will out...and, by the way maybe our next majority Congress men and women will not be attorneys, but EDUCATORS...LESS LEGAL EXPERTS ABLE TO MAKE LAWS THAT GO AGAINS OUR PUBLIC INTEREST...and, on our Supreme Courts...you know giving lobbys the controlling interest in what is good ofr our country...(smile)

C-H-A-N-G-E AND WE THE VOTER ARE THE GOVERNMENT...I must start to practice what I preach about our being the government...thanks Clark for this heads up (smile)
