Taking a direct action to speak out against the recent budget cuts and take affirmative action for education reform, the Democrats for Education Reform as well as other education-minded organizations recently drafted a letter addressed to “Dear Senator/Congressman” asking for action on a variety of points including:
• Saving teaching Jobs
• Serving High-Need Populations like minorities, handicapped and poor students
• Innovate and Invest in education policy:
o Race to the Top
o Proposed teacher and education administration reforms
o Future education tools
As teachers, administrators, parents and students, we can take an example from the DFER and their communication with their local representatives.
To truly bring about change in your local school system, you will need the help of your senator, congressman or even mayor. Awareness of the current conditions of your school system is not as universal as you may think, and by making it a focus for your representative, you can get the ball rolling for change in your school system.
