Black History Month (or African-American History Month as the President has renamed it) has got me thinking. My ancestors are from Wales, Germany, Sweden, and God knows where else. But I have no cultural ties with any of those regions. Now my daughter-in-law from Holland, Michigan has some ties with her Dutch heritage, like the tulip festival and clacking around in those wooden shoes. But most members here seem to have a much stronger cultural identity, and of a different quality. Just an observation. And now another plug for my previous blog, because what is being done above our noses will not discriminate based on skin tone, cultural identity, or any other basis. http://blackinamerica.com/cgi-bin/blog.cgi...

And further, where does it all start? With our Federal government, who has not abandoned the question of race in the census, a question that was first used to account for the number of slaves versus the free. If the Federal government tells us we are divided by race, who benefits?

I've been looking forward to your reply my sister, and I am not disappointed (smile).
So I who have had to survive in a certain way have a culture which is my own, the product of my environment and upbringing. And you, a descendant of Africans enslaved in America, and having gone through the turbulence and struggle of the '60s, and having majored in African-American studies, have the pride of your own culture. This is entirely understandable.
Then there are the younger generations of descendants of Africans. Many have a culture not far removed from mine. Many have a culture formed by the ravages of our inner cities.
But I hope for a day when we share a common culture that would have the will to solve the problems of education and poverty, that would accept and value the diversity of our society and not look done on others, that would be peaceful and generous, and not wage war.

Steve, I'm glad your were born. And in a cultural realm I hoping you experienced a most cultural rich birthday on yesterday. I sent wishes telepathically too.
Enjoyed the views you've shared about ancestors, I think we have an array of culture if we all searched our family history. The diversity of many cultures in family lines may amaze us that we have bloodlines that would or might surprise us. I'm opened minded to all people and culture....even willing to learn more so that I find ways to interact to understand, grow and share how love is very universal.

Me "I" tend to relate culture as a natural learned survival tool like every thing else in Nature that is only spoiled by trying to legal lize and socialsize all things natural which has and always back fire on mankind...
Culture is directly related to our need to survive in our different enviornments...example...
People who lived near the sea and near water eat a lot of fish and shell fish. They use different kinds of tools than is needed by someone who lives on the open plain and must hunt deer and other game foods to survive...and yes they drys differently and have no reason to pray to the river God for their lively hoods. The ones who farm and grow fruits will maybe pray to the rain God but not the river God.
The 'cultures" as in survival needs of south America will not wear the same kinds of dress as the Eskimo because this would be deadly to them and vic versa no matter how funny the other may see the other's type of clothing may be as foolish and they both live near open seas and eat lots of fish...TO ME THIS IS HOW I SEE CULTURE AND REGRET IT IS SO USED AND ABUSED TO SHOW DIFFERENT IS DEFECIENT. (NUP)

Steve again we try to hard to get rid of natural things..."I; am proud of my being a member of the Black skin race and will not allow it to be taken from me...as it has more to do with culture than skin color (remember my siteres and brothers who can pass if they choose to do so?)...
and, as far as our president goes don't for get no one believes him when he says he is a Christian and is a natural born America so don't sweat it about hischoice of id for this month...you can't please everyone os I am sure he doesn't even waste his time or energy beating tose dead horses any more...don't forget what robert saya about how we in my race sould identify our selves to please him. looooooooooooooooooool (smile)
NOw Steve I hope you are not saying our government has any thing to do with your having a family who came from a family, and from a family since time began for all humans having born of woman. (smile)
and, by the way how many slaves were ownd by black plantation owners during slavery according to those census reports, Steve? (smile)

Steve, remember I am the one who says we survived Chattel slavery and should be proud and happy that we have done so...the same goes with as we look at it in NDB that we and our enviornment (in this moment and in real time) are like a fish in water we need each other...
but when we tend to not take responsibility for our own actions and put it on others and as long as we continue to do this then there will be a need for war, hate and discriminations as we need a scape goat at all times to make us look better as we refuse to accept the responsible of something aS simple as , "LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU"...(AS MIISRAEL just put it so beautifully as did you my brother)
AGAIN, WE ARE HUMANS THAT COME READY MADE FOR SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. (S-M-I-L-E)
