JIM CROW RETURNS
Millions of Minority Votes Threated By Electoral Purge
By Greg Palast for Al Jazeera America

Election officials in 27 states, most of them Republicans, have launched a program that threatens a massive purge of voters from the rolls. Millions, especially black, Hispanic and Asian-American voters, are at risk. Already, tens of thousands have been removed in at least one battleground state, and the numbers are expected to climb, according to a six-month-long, nationwide investigation by Al Jazeera America.

At the heart of this voter-roll scrub is the Interstate Crosscheck program, which has generated a master list of nearly 7 million names. Officials say that these names represent legions of fraudsters who are not only registered but have actually voted in two or more states in the same election — a felony punishable by 2 to 10 years in prison.

Until now, state elections officials have refused to turn over their Crosscheck lists, some on grounds that these voters are subject to criminal investigation. Now, for the first time, three states — Georgia, Virginia and Washington — have released their lists to Al Jazeera America, providing a total of just over 2 million names.

The Crosscheck list of suspected double voters has been compiled by matching names from roughly 110 million voter records from participating states. Interstate Crosscheck is the pet project of Kansas’ controversial Republican secretary of state, Kris Kobach, known for his crusade against voter fraud.

The three states’ lists are heavily weighted with names such as Jackson, Garcia, Patel and Kim — ones common among minorities, who vote overwhelmingly Democratic. Indeed, fully 1 in 7 African-Americans in those 27 states, plus the state of Washington (which enrolled in Crosscheck but has decided not to utilize the results), are listed as under suspicion of having voted twice. This also applies to 1 in 8 Asian-Americans and 1 in 8 Hispanic voters. White voters too — 1 in 11 — are at risk of having their names scrubbed from the voter rolls, though not as vulnerable as minorities.

If even a fraction of those names are blocked from voting or purged from voter rolls, it could alter the outcome of next week’s electoral battle for control of the U.S. Senate — and perhaps prove decisive in the 2016 presidential vote count.

“It’s Jim Crow all over again,” says the Rev. Joseph Lowery, who cofounded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King, Jr. Lowery, now 93, says he recognizes in the list of threatened voters a sophisticated new form of an old and tired tactic. “I think [the Republicans] would use anything they can find. Their desperation is rising.”

Young and old, go vote, after tonight we only have 4 days to go. if the GOP gains both houses, they will impeach President Obama, nothing will be done for the middle, thry will give more tax breaks to the wealthy and raise taxes on the middle class and the poor, repeal the affordable care act, social security, EPA, food stamps, minimum wage will be under attack.

Make sure that you get out the vole on or before NOV 4th.

Thank You AlJazeera for the Great Research and Information

This is timely information Brother Deacon. I was wondering why I was still registered in Pennsylvania whe I had voted in California in 2012. I thought it was like drivers licenses, that you couldn't be registered in more than one state. I don't remember if I claimed a party affiliation in 2012, but I did vote for Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate. The Republicans should be okay with that, but in Pennsylvani I am registered Libertarian. They don't like us either, because they figure without the Libertarian party we would otherwise vote Republican.

You are very welcome Robert, glad to be of service.

Have the people forgotten already how much trouble it caused when the Republicans shut the government down?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, October 31st 2014 at 3:05PM

Sister Lotton,

Yes I do remember how much we the tax payer paid for the Republicans to shut down the government, 1.5 Billion dollars a day at a tune of 24 billion dollars for that theatrics and if you liked what was going on at the end of the Bush administration, if the GOP gets control of both houses, we will see more of that.

4 more days before the nation goes to the polls. Already early voting is at a all time high but we can not stop now. We got to call Every one we know, someone how important this vote is November 4th.

They could not make pres. Obama "A One Term Presindent but if they get in, they will surly make his last two years in office HELL.

There is only two days to go to get out the vote.

If you have not voted yet, please come and vote. The pollsters think that of the DEMS stay home and not vote, the GOP will win the senate and the GOP will have both houses. They will be coming after President Obama. So we must make our vote count. Come, “We can do it.”

They are willing to steal this election so, let us make it to much for them to do.

Brother Steve,

My family and I have already voted and on this last day to vote I encourage everyone to come to the polls and vote, now.

Adam Fate Tuesday, November 4th 2014 at 10:40AM

Brother Deacon,

My most pressing concern here in PA is for Governor/Lieutenant Governor. I am heading to the polls shortly.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 4th 2014 at 10:47AM

Brother Steve,

Let me among the first to Thank You for going to vote.

Adam Fate Tuesday, November 4th 2014 at 3:09PM

Brother Deacon,

The best part was talking politics with the party volunteers. My father-in-law was judge of elections at this polling place when he was alive.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 4th 2014 at 9:10PM

Brother Steve,

Now I am looking at the results of the mid-term election's and it is to early to tell.
