Breaking News: John Boehner Will Step Down Next Month

Republican House Speaker John Boehner will resign as Speaker and leave his seat at the end of October, NBC News has confirmed.

A Boehner aide told NBC News that the Speaker "believes putting members through prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution. He is proud of what this majority has accomplished, and his Speakership, but for the good of the Republican Conference and the institution, he will resign the Speakership and his seat in Congress, effective October 30."

Boehner has been under prolonged pressure from conservatives in his party, who have accused him of failing to fight the Obama administration on issues important to the GOP.

Foes within his party had been pushing to oust him if he presented any legislation that would continue to fund the government and avoid a government shutdown without stripping federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

An aide to Boehner said that the Ohio Republican had planned to serve only through the end of last year, but that the stunning primary loss of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor changed that calculation.

Boehner was front and center during Thursday's address to Congress by Pope Francis. Boehner, who is Catholic, sat directly behind the pontiff and was visibly emotional for most of his speech.

"Speaker Boehner believes that the first job of any Speaker is to protect this institution and, as we saw yesterday with the Holy Father, it is the one thing that unites and inspires us all," said the Boehner aide.

Boehner will not only leave his house seat but he will leave politics leaving the republican leadership. All of this came on the visit of the Pope. This is news.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner will resign as speaker of the House and give up his House seat at the end of October, ending a tumultuous five-year tenure at the helm of the House and a 25-year career in Congress.

Boehner made the surprise announcement to stunned GOP colleagues at a closed-door meeting Friday morning — less than 24 hours after he reveled in the first-ever papal speech to a joint session of Congress, something he has dreamed of for 20 years, and as the government is on the verge of another shutdown if Boehner's fractious caucus in the House can't reach agreement with the Senate to fund the government beyond Sept. 30.

“Speaker Boehner believes that the first job of any speaker is to protect this institution and, as we saw yesterday with the Holy Father, it is the one thing that unites and inspires us all,” said an aide to the Ohio Republican.

Boehner had planned to retire at the end of last year. But when his top deputy, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., was unseated in a 2014 election, Boehner decided to hold on to the speaker’s gavel for a little longer.

But he never had a firm grip on power. And his announcement Friday came amid a fresh threat to his leadership, with conservatives vowing to oust him if he did not take a hard line in their push to defund Planned Parenthood.

“The speaker believes putting members through prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution,” a spokeswoman for Boehner said Friday. “He is proud of what this majority has accomplished, and his speakership, but for the good of the Republican conference and the institution, he will resign the speakership and his seat in Congress, effective October 30.”

Boehner has served as speaker since the Republicans took control of the House of Representatives following the 2010 midterm elections.

MY COMMENTS: I think by doing this, Speaker John Boehner threw himself on a hand grenade to save the country from shutting down over the republican plan.

Washington (CNN)—John Boehner, the Ohio Republican who steered his party to an overwhelming House majority in 2010, told colleagues Friday he's stepping down as Speaker and will leave Congress at the end of October.

The abrupt decision comes after he faced heavy pressure from conservatives to take a harder line on their causes, most recently over defunding Planned Parenthood.

Boehner, who has presided over the House since 2011, explained during a closed-door meeting with Republicans Friday morning that he had only planned to serve two terms as speaker but decided to hold onto his post after then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his seat during a primary last year, a Republican lawmaker in the room told CNN.

Boehner, who didn't speak to reporters on Friday, also told the lawmakers that Pope Francis' visit to Congress the day before was a crystallizing moment, according to the lawmaker. Boehner then read the prayer of St. Francis to the conference after announcing his decision.

"After yesterday with the Pope, he decided to leave on this high note," a top Boehner aide told CNN. "Literally did not make the decision til last night."

The Ohio Republican's tenure as speaker has been marked by clashes with conservatives -- especially when it comes to fiscal policy. He's struggled to push through legislation to increase the debt ceiling and was facing another showdown next week to keep the government open. The speaker has often relied on Democratic votes during these moments -- a strategy that has infuriated conservatives.

Now the far right "The Tea Bagger's" still can't elect one of there own to the leadership position of the republican party because it is not enough of them.

Now, they want have Boehner to use as a punching bag no more.

They still can't get over that move by John Boehner. See this was good timing because the attention is still on the Pope and not on this move by Boehner.

GREAT MOVE....

But now that the Pope is leaving the US today, I'm sure the media will re-direct the attention and focus on Mr. Boehner. After all, he's not leaving until sometime in October, right? ...

I am looking at the News right now and that is exactly what they are doing, the republican's are in a frenzy.
