Million Man March: US race rally courts next generation

1995 march for black rights was one of the biggest race rallies in US history, and organisers say it's time for another.

New York, United States - Toussaint Werner made it to the other side of the expressway.

He grew up in the ganglands of Englewood, a mostly black area of Chicago. But he worked hard in college and now runs a business and raises his family on the other side of the I-94 highway, a safer suburb a few blocks from US President Barack Obama's home in the city.

In many ways, Werner embodies the spirit of the Million Man March, the rally he attended with his father on a fresh October morning in 1995: that black men should be pillars of their communities, rather than victims of gangs, drugs or poverty.

"It was about empowerment, becoming your own man and supporting your community first," Werner, 39, a self-employed designer, told Al Jazeera.

A photo taken by his father, Eric, shows the 19-year-old Werner, head bowed, holding hands and praying with fellow protesters. Attendees describe a multi-faith crowd of rich and poor alike talking, hugging and laughing in the National Mall. Read More: http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/...

How the Million Man March changed one man’s life. By Tom Rowley October 7

Everybody passing Ronnie Mosley had a purpose — the early-morning commuters, the marchers leaping from the trains. Mosley sat on a bench in Union Station, the only one not sure where to go.

Mosley’s main purpose was providing for his 4-year-old son, Brandon, whom he cradled in a white blanket. But on that day in 1995, he was failing even at that.

Brandon was hungry, and Mosley had run out of money. “We’ll be all right,” Mosley reassured his son. But he wondered, “What the hell’s going to happen?”

What happened was one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in American history, Louis Farrakhan’s Million Man March. Mosley — circus hand, ex-Army Ranger, struggling single dad — had just stumbled upon it.

Million Man March: On the Bus

As he travels from New Jersey to the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March in DC, journalist Todd S.Burroughs looks at the reasons for the gathering, the nostalgia for battles lost and won.

On the floor by my bed is one of the books that made me a journalist, Sylvester Monroe and Peter Goldman's Brothers. (Goldman, I would learn later, wrote the biography, The Death and Life of Malcolm X.) I moved it around this morning because I couldn't find my bus ticket for this Million Man March reunion. That book told the stories of black men struggling to survive in Chicago and beyond.

The Million Man March was an attempt by black men to write their own stories, in their own minds and hearts. What, then, is this 20th MMM reunion, "Justice--Or Else!" about, really? Black men were considered an endangered species when Brothers came out in 1988, the first MMM in 1995, and perhaps still now. Why do this?

Now that the Million Man March it over, what do you think about what happen to day?

We need a prophet!

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, October 11th 2015 at 9:52AM

No we as a people don't need a any false prophets.

Harry Watley Sunday, October 11th 2015 at 12:33PM

Mr. Deacon,
You do agree with me that we need a prophet. That shows that I am smarter than you are. The hurdle to get over is discerning a genuine prophet from a false prophet!

We need a genuine prophet since a prophet is the closest human man next to God since God when as far as anointing him.
We don’t need a Muslim mins. or a Christian preacher since God did not anoint either one.

I am the only way for Black Americans. When you have a genuine prophet amongst us then you know that God is in our midst! It is never hard to figure out who the prophet is because he will stick out like a sore thumb. He will be thrown out of the churches and mosques. He will be rejected on social web-sites.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, October 11th 2015 at 2:13PM

It is about time your fake fauls prophet act showed your disrespecting, self centered, misleading act on to this very popular blog with this self- serving BS of yours. FuFu, you are the one that I was referring to in the first place and low and behold, you walked in. The million man march 2015 shows African American's one thing for sure, that we don't need a false prophet named Harry W Watley. You saw hunders of thousands of African American Men come together in one place, United for the purpose of bettering themselves as leaders of their families, places of worship and in there community.

Now here you come, if you was to call for something like that, you would not fill up a street corner. Lol....

Harry Watley Sunday, October 11th 2015 at 4:46PM

Mr. Deacon,

I am not going to argue with you. We agree that we do need a prophet. Since we agree on at least one talking point that we do need a prophet than that is the road we should explore, but you would rather argue so this will be by last comment!

When you are not able to knock down at least one of the points I raised in my previous post then I know all you want to do is argue for nothing and I am not up to it!

We are not talking about the same thing yet we are suppose to be having one conversation and one subject, but we don’t! I am just tired dialoguing with you.
You are talking about bettering the family and I am talking about having our own country to become a nation among other nations. I am talking about having our own religion. I am talking about having our own prophet who is a born Black American.
These things I am talking about only God can bring them about, so why would you not think that God is with us? The answer is because you have been made Christian STIPID by the White man.
To think that bettering the families are more important than becoming a nation in a country of our own is not logical! So, I conclude that all you want to do is argue. Therefore, this will be my last comment.

HARRY, First of all this blog is not about you or your attempt to hy-jack the ebb and flow of this blog. I set the tone on this blog and not you, do you understand that? Now if you want to join this topic, you are always welcome but you will not Hy-jack this blog, GOT IT!!!

YES, we agree on many things, like the time of day or if it is day or night but when it comes to your LIES and disrespect: Your words: I am not interest in dialoguing about Hebrew people since I am not a Hebrew man. You and I are two Black American men. With all due respect, FU*K the Hebrew people!

You have said it all for me back on Friday, December 26th 2014 but yet I continued to poke holes all throughout your small trolling one subject act and agenda.

Harry this blog is not about what you are talking about and never was and you have not ever proofed that Christianity was ever a white man’s religion, not once but I have shown you time after time that all of the prophets was Black Hebrews from Abraham to Jesus Christ and this is more reason for us to hear the voice of YAH and keep his commandments because if we refuse, we will end up like yourself going against his will and turning your back on YAH the creator of all that is you.

Abraham was Hebrew, Moses was Hebrew, Jesus Christ was Hebrew, I am Hebrew and our people are Hebrew. The Hebrew people was the first creation of God. In this blog, we are talking about the current event of The Million Man March 2015 and not your misdirecting point of view.

You are truly a fuming mad, wrathful blind and sightless man and may GOD forgive your pitiful small minded, angling, spinning, ever fishing, and trolling soul.

PS. HARRY, I forgive you for your failed attempt to mislead the people on Black In American.

This time, the rally organiser, Louis Farrakhan - the charismatic, firebrand leader of the Nation of Islam, of which Malcolm X was a member - has invited women, Latinos and Native Americans along in a bid to broaden the event's reach.
