Carson: West Point scholarship account could have been clearer

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said on Friday he could have been clearer in his autobiography when he described receiving a scholarship from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Carson's account of being offered a full scholarship to the prestigious academy was called into question after his campaign admitted he had never even applied to the school.

"I guess it could have been more clarified," Carson told Fox News in an interview, not explaining the discrepancy. "I told it as I understood it."

This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.

EARLIER:

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson's campaign said on Friday he never applied nor was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, apparently contradicting an account in Carson's autobiography that he had been offered a full scholarship by the prestigious school.

His own words: I guess it could have been more clarified," Carson told Fox News in an interview.

The question is, was this admission of Ben Carson in his book:

"West Point has occupied a central place in Carson’s personal story for years. According to a tale told in his book, “Gifted Hands,” the then-17 year old was introduced in 1969 to Gen. William Westmoreland, who had just ended his command of U.S. forces in Vietnam, and the two dined together. That meeting, according to Carson’s telling, was followed by the offer of a “full scholarship” to the military academy."

Now if Ben Carson, been saying this for years, Carson has said he was offered a “full scholarship” to the U.S. Military Academy while he was a high-achieving high-school ROTC cadet in the late 1960s. But Carson never applied to West Point, was never accepted — and never received a formal scholarship offer. West Point doesn’t offer scholarships; all cadets attend for free.

That is what has been the practice for all military personnel, FREE EDUCATION.

What is wrong with the Republican Party when a man like this can become a front runner for Republicans in the presidential bid for the Nations top JOB? WOW!

Steve Williams Friday, November 6th 2015 at 11:47PM

You quoted everyone but Carson himself:

At the end of my twelfth grade I marched at the head of the Memorial Day parade. I felt so proud, my chest bursting with ribbons and braids of every kind. To make it more wonderful, We had important visitors that day. Two soldiers who had won the Congressional Medal of Honor in Viet Nam were present. More exciting to me, General William Westmoreland (very prominent in the Viet Nam war) attended with an impressive entourage. Afterward, Sgt. Hunt introduced me to General Westmoreland, and I had dinner with him and the Congressional Medal winners. Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point. I didn’t refuse the scholarship outright, but I let them know that a military career wasn’t where I saw myself going.

Steve, have you ever been in the Military?

Steve Williams Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 7:22AM

I am standing by...

Steve Williams Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 1:51PM

"If I had a general come up to me when I was 17 years old and try to convince me to go to West Point and he told me my expenses would be paid, I don't think it would be so far-fetched to think he offered me a scholarship," said Warren Galkin, 86, of Warwick, Rhode Island, who has given money to a political action committee supporting Carson's campaign.

Steve Williams Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 1:52PM

Carson's credibility doesn't worry me. Hillary's does.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 2:14PM

Steven,

Don't tell me about what someone else said. I asked you to view this link and we can talk about what you heard for yourself.

How view the link and comeback and let's talk about what you heard, ok?

Steve Williams Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 4:20PM

I did view the link, that's where I got the quote. I saw Ben answering questions about last night and he was pissed!

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 8:52PM

Did you see where he said: That meeting, according to Carson’s telling, was followed by the offer of a “full scholarship” to the military academy.

This is the LIE This pathological liar told and got busted on.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 10:31PM

Wait a Minute Steve, did you see in the video what Ben said about telling, the offer of a “full scholarship” to the military academy which he is now denying that he ever said?

Steve Williams Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 10:54PM

I've watched all the videos Ron.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 11:08PM

The question was: did you see in the video what Ben said about talking about, the offer of a “full scholarship” to the military academy which he is now denying that he ever said?

Steve Williams Sunday, November 8th 2015 at 1:04AM

If you had watched the full 19 minute video I posted Ron, YOU would have heard what he said. You are one brainswashed liberal.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, November 8th 2015 at 3:39AM

What is the matter Steven? You must see that Ben Carson is lying through his teeth too and got busted for it. Now you don't want to admit it so you are trying to change the subject, fast but I see you. Why do you put up with that?

I guess you also believe that Joseph of the Bible build the pyramids in Egypt to store grain like Ben Carson said too?

Steve Williams Sunday, November 8th 2015 at 10:35AM

What I guess Ron is that you are a blind follower of the Democratic party.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, November 8th 2015 at 7:02PM

STEVEN,

I will not engage in name calling because when you do this, you have lost your point.

Did Republican front runner candidate for President Ben Carson say those things?

Steve Williams Monday, November 9th 2015 at 1:35AM

Stop trying to get me to support your hype Ron.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, November 9th 2015 at 4:16AM

Steven,

You can surport anyone you like. Did Ben say those things or not?

Steve Williams Monday, November 9th 2015 at 6:59AM

Ron, Ben Carson is not a pathological liar, Hillary Clinton is.

Steve Williams Monday, November 9th 2015 at 7:21AM

There's lots of things I judge a candidate on, but his use of words to describe free tuition isn't one of them.

Steve Williams Monday, November 9th 2015 at 7:28AM

I was offered a full scholarship to go to Air Force Officer Training School. So what?

There is no such thing as a full scholarship to go to Air Force Officer Training School, that is the point Steven.

Steve Williams Monday, November 9th 2015 at 12:39PM

That's what I'm saying Ron. The point is, the Air Force wanted me and I turned them down.

Ben is getting free press but what is his policy for the country, do you know?

Steve Williams Tuesday, November 10th 2015 at 8:12AM

What I know is Ben Carson has a proven record of a rational, scientific approach to problems. Hillary is too stupid to even secure a simple email server. Plus, look how she turned on Bernie with that s*xism crap.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 10th 2015 at 9:29AM

YOUR WORDS: What I know is Ben Carson has a proven record of a rational, scientific approach to problems.

This is the same man that said Joseph built the pyramids to store grain. Is this rational, or scientific?

Where is his policies to run this country, don't you think we the people should have seen something by now.
