How Trump got religion — and why his legendary minister’s son now rejects him

Donald J. Trump likes to cite an exalted force when he’s asked about his religious convictions.

God?

Jesus?

Himself?

Try Norman Vincent Peale, the Christian minister whose book, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” was a pillar of American self-help culture during the 1950s and beyond.

Or “the great Norman Vincent Peale,” as the Republican front-runner refers to the preacher, who ministered to Trump and his parents before his 1993 death.

The feeling toward Trump is not exactly mutual among Peale’s offspring.

John Peale, 79, the minister’s son, said he winces when Trump invokes his father’s name, as the candidate has several times since launching his presidential campaign.

“I cringe,” Peale said in a phone interview. “I don’t respect Mr. Trump very much. I don’t take him very seriously. I regret the publicity of the connection. This is a problem for the Peale family.”

"I don’t think the image of Norman Vincent Peale that comes through Donald Trump is any connection to the idea I have of him,” said Peale, an ordained minister who described himself as a Democrat.

And?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, January 25th 2016 at 9:05AM

“I cringe,” Peale said in a phone interview. “I don’t respect Mr. Trump very much. I don’t take him very seriously. I regret the publicity of the connection. This is a problem for the Peale family.”

If you say that someone is a problem for your family, who is best to call out that problem, you or Bobby?

Steve Williams Monday, January 25th 2016 at 3:28PM

Let's talk about the book, The Power of Positive Thinking.

Steve Williams Monday, January 25th 2016 at 3:29PM

Did the son get the father's message?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, January 25th 2016 at 3:38PM

Steve, I love that book and that would be a great topic for you to start a blog on "The Power of Positive Thinking" but that is not what this blog is about.

Thank You.

Steve Williams Monday, January 25th 2016 at 4:03PM

That's what I'm wondering. Is this blog about Trump should not have read his father's book, or is it Trump should not have said he read his father's book? Or is it just that Trump is not a 'true' positive thinker?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, January 25th 2016 at 6:40PM

The son probably cringe because he was must closer to trump then you would ever be. He has much more in common then you will ever have and he see thrump for what he is. It is you who are dreaming of positiveness coming out of Trump.

Steve Williams Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 2:25AM

I don't know if the son is close to Trump but I do onow he's a Democrat. I'm not a Democrat so I don't have that problem. Trump is a godsend.

Steve Williams Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 8:10AM

A new NBC national poll shows Trump up 5 points, among white evangelical voters, since quoting Two Corinthians.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 9:26AM

The FACT that Trump went to the same church where the son attended should tell you something.

Trump Says He Could 'Shoot Somebody' and Still Maintain Support http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-elect...

I hope that the person he shots isn't one of us. He has a strange sense of humor, AH!

That man don't give a dam about anyone but his ratings.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 9:45AM

Remember Steve, Trump is in the fighting for 42 percent that admit they are republicans is at 36 percent of 42 percent of all Republicans in the United States, every other Republican is for someone else.

Steve Williams Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 4:35PM

I'm not a Republican Ron, and I'm not angry. Finally we have soneone who will get shat done.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 5:59PM

That is great Steve, I am not a republican neither. You say: Finally we have soneone who will get shat done.
Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 4:35PM WHO!!!

Steve Williams Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 10:01PM

They're saying Donald is making a mistake not attending the upcoming debate. I haven't seen him make a mistake yet and this will be no exception.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, January 27th 2016 at 4:16AM

Tuesday, January 26th 2016 at 4:35PM

WHO!!! WHO IS THAT PERSON?

Steve Williams Wednesday, January 27th 2016 at 4:46AM

Donald J. Trump. He's a builder, a doer.

Steve Williams Wednesday, January 27th 2016 at 4:49AM

I heard on the news last night about a person Huckabee met in Iowa who makes $59,000 a year and pays $26,000 of that in health insurance premiums. That's the ACA at work.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, January 27th 2016 at 6:04AM

I don't know what you heard but dead man's Health condition sounds real serious. Just think what that man would have been paid, if the affordable care act was not in place!!

Let's go back to pre-existing conditions. Would dead man get any healthcare? It really don't sound like it.

Steve Williams Wednesday, January 27th 2016 at 6:45AM

He and his wife are in perfect health.

Steve Williams Wednesday, January 27th 2016 at 4:18PM

Fox is all butthurt that Donald's not playing.

Steve Williams Thursday, January 28th 2016 at 10:08AM

Look for other candidates to bail on the debate and join Trump.

Steve Williams Thursday, January 28th 2016 at 4:21PM

Huckabee and Santorum have confirmed.

Steve Williams Friday, January 29th 2016 at 7:58AM

Hay Ron, did you watch Trump's event last night?

Steve Williams Friday, January 29th 2016 at 2:09PM

Donald demolished Megyn Kelley/Fox Their second debate was down 46% from their first.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, January 29th 2016 at 4:10PM

Did you learn anything on how the Donald would run the country as president?

Steve Williams Friday, January 29th 2016 at 6:30PM

Absolutely. Did you watch Ron? It was stunning.

Steve Williams Friday, January 29th 2016 at 6:39PM

What I learned:

1. Donald Trump genuinely cares about vets. He raised $6 million in 24 hours.
2. Donald Trump knows how to walk away from a bad deal.
3. Every single voter who called into C-Span after the event, Republican or Democrat, enthusiastically supported Donald Trump for President.

He will win Iowa by a landslide.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, January 29th 2016 at 8:31PM

What you learned.

Steve Williams Friday, January 29th 2016 at 8:33PM

It looks to me like you only watch the news you agree with Ron. Or did you see the veteran who lost his leg speaking for Trump?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, January 29th 2016 at 8:56PM

Steven,

I watch both sides of this issues and when I saw this: Trump flips ‘policy’ speech into questionable fundraiser http://www.rawstory.com/2015/09/rachel-mad...

I knew that the Donald supports have short memories and falling for the same old BS that Donald played on them/ you before.

The veterans are not going to be used by The Donald as ponds. The US veterans is too dam important to be used by this FAKE move by refusing to except that deceivers monies. It is sad to say that the republicans have to deal with this clown. Did you see how pitiful that rest of the GOP looked up there?

Steve Williams Friday, January 29th 2016 at 10:26PM

I boycotted the debate. Now Fox is refusing to cover Trump but watch how they change their tune on Monday.

How Trump got religion — and why his legendary minister’s son now rejects him

Norman Vincent Peale, the Christian minister whose book, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” was a pillar of American self-help culture during the 1950s

the 1950s for who.....'whiteSupremist' America.?

----- For the NORMAL Mr. Donald J. TRUMP supporter, like the selfProfessed 'whiteMen' like steve OR like YOU...'blackWhiteHebrewIsraelite' RACIST believer......

Norman Vincent Peale is NOTHING, NOWHERE near ..... of a Hero to America 2016.......

Steve Williams Saturday, January 30th 2016 at 12:34PM

It's what all religion comes down to - positive thinking.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Saturday, January 30th 2016 at 9:48PM

Steven,

I see that you had nothing to say of that stunt Trump of Rachel Maddow: ‘Veterans’ group’ fundraising off Trump speech is really one guy in S. Dakota.

If I was following a LIE, I would want to find out more and why I am following a LIE. I would have to put myself in check. This man would hide behind veteran groups to run and hide behind. WOW!

And you would follow that kind of person, says volumes about you Steven.

Steve Williams Sunday, January 31st 2016 at 6:22AM

That news is over 4 months old Ron. It was before I got so fed up with Rachel that I switched and started watching Megyn Kelly at nine instead. In short Ron, she disgusted me with her treatment of Rand Paul so I refuse to watch her anymore. At the time I did had an opinion of her piece on Trump, but I don't remember what it was and I have no interest in revisiting it now. Tomorrow is Iowa and the first votes. Now Ron, are the volumes like Obama says, that I'm a poor working class uneducated blue collar white guy, full of hate fear and loathing? How funny.

Steve Williams Sunday, January 31st 2016 at 6:34AM

As a Libertarian in Pennsylvania I don't have the 'right' to vote in a primary. But it's clear who the Republican nominee will be. Hillary won't survive her email crimes so that means I'll be choosing between Trump and Sanders. That's your political process at work Ron, not mine.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, January 31st 2016 at 7:34AM

Trump is hoping that many more Americans have short memories just like yours Steven when it comes to Iowa. That man is using the middle class just like he used the name "VETERANS" to hide behind.

Steve Williams Sunday, January 31st 2016 at 8:17AM

It's not a question of memory Ron. Every candidate has multiple planks to their platform and every voter has their priorities. It's my priorities and Trump's support for them that has caused me to support him.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, January 31st 2016 at 8:58AM

I think that memory should play a major role in potting your support for any candidate. If one say that say, he supports the troops and then creates a group that wrote a letter to the media in his support for them and it turns out after investigation that veterans group was just one person after saying thousands of veterans support that candidate, is a fraud and don't deserve the trust of the people of The United States of American.

That was Donald Trump according to this link Trump flips ‘policy’ speech into questionable fundraiser http://www.rawstory.com/2015/09/rachel-mad...

Donald Trump won't take my guns, won't bend over for ISIS, will strengthen not cut Social Security, and won't double the debt like Bernie. What else can I ask for?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, February 1st 2016 at 9:21AM

Who wants to take your guns?

Remember who get Benloton.

The Republican Party are the ones Who wants to privatize Social Security.

Ask the Donald how Will he get the Mexicans to pay for that wall?

Steve Williams Monday, February 1st 2016 at 11:07AM

Ron, I don't care about the wall, one way or the other. I said let them all come, but if the People want a wall, why not? Don't we have laws for immigration? Remember how they got Benloton?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, February 1st 2016 at 4:31PM

Correction to my type "O" Ben Laden

BUSH would not go and get Ben Laden but Obama did, you remember that don't you?

Now, Who wants to take away your guns again?

The Republican Party are the ones Who wants to privatize Social Security so, that the oligarchs can put there hands on 2 trillion dollars, which don't contribute one red cent to the deficit.

Steve Williams Monday, February 1st 2016 at 4:56PM

Sure Ron, but don't forget my comment about the national debt.

1. Here's how Obama got Bin Laden:

Pakistan's Abbottabad Commission, set up to probe the raid and previous efforts to capture the Al-Qaeda leader, delivered a trenchant condemnation of the US decision to unilaterally launch the operation inside Pakistani territory without seeking permission from the government in Islamabad. It painted the United States as an "arrogant" military power disdainful of the rights of other nations, over which it would ride roughshod in pursuit of its security goals.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...

2. Hillary Clinton is out to get my guns, following Obama. Bernie I'm not too worried about, and Donald Trump not in the least.

3. The Republican that has zero respect for Social Security is Christie. I'm not worried about Trump in the least.

Steve Williams Monday, February 1st 2016 at 5:26PM

Obama is going to a radical mosque on Wednesday.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, February 1st 2016 at 7:56PM

Tell that to over 3000 Americans both men, women and children in the twin towers murders in New York on 911. President Obama vowed to make Bin Laden pay, no matter where in the world that THUG was, sorry Pakistani.

I have often heard that from the extreme right wing of the Republican party side the very same thing that you are now saying, Do you have any proof that President Obama made any attempt to come for any American holding a legal firearm license for their guns. Did The President, make any laws to that effect, to take anyone guns who past a legal background check Steven?

Trump will do the bidding of the Oligarchs. He has broadcast what he is going to do. He said that he will make America strong again, ""STRONG AGAING!" FOR WHO? NOT THE BLUE COLLAR WORKS!!! their is too much evidence in those states that have RIGHT TO WORK LAWS in them, that LIE don't work, just look at Michigan. STEVEN, it is not just Christie, a republican governor, it is the republican party.

YOUR WORDS: Obama is going to a radical mosque on Wednesday. A radical mosque, what makes that mosque radical?

Steve Williams Monday, February 1st 2016 at 10:20PM

Americans just can't see it Ron, what America's first President said has come true. America has been ruined by Party politics. That's why our current President can invade sovereign countries and the People accept it. As far as the mosque being radical, I heard it from a reformed Muslin leader. Do you need me to look it up for you?

Steve Williams Monday, February 1st 2016 at 10:56PM

On the January 31 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends Sunday, co-host Anna Kooiman asked frequent Fox guest Zuhdi Jasser about the Islamic Society of Baltimore's "ties to terrorism," and Jasser claimed that the ISB is "like a covert operation" because its website has "no name on it" and "basically has pictures of individuals but no names." Jasser continued to link the entire mosque to extremism through the cherry-picked selections of two imams, one of whom left ISB in 2003:

ANNA KOOIMAN (CO-HOST): What do you know about this mosque? Ties to terrorism, how?

ZUHDI JASSER: Well, you know, as an American Muslim I'm just insulted. It's disgraceful that this is one of the mosques -- or the mosque -- that he's picked to be the first visit. The Islamic Society of Baltimore, first of all if you go to their website it's like a covert operation. There's no name on it. It basically has pictures of individuals but no names. They had an imam, Mohammed Al-Sheikh, who was there from '83 to '89 and then another 10 years, was directly, came out of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan. Has had online imam sermons in which he basically excused Palestinian suicide bombing. He then went in to fill in, he was the guy who took over at Dar Al-Hijrah mosque in Northern Virginia after Awlaki left, and I'll remind you Awlaki is the imam that declared war on the United States, radicalized Nidal Hasan and so many other Americans against our country. So this mosque is very concerning, they are very into gender apartheid. The imam Yaseen Shaikh in 2013 has a YouTube sermon from just two years ago calling homos*xuals basically psychological deviants, a disorder, and basically espousing a very extreme opinions about homos*xuality, which I would think is at divergence from the president's position on that. [Fox News, Fox & Friends Sunday, 1/31/16]

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, February 2nd 2016 at 4:23AM

Down goes TRUMP. Second place is not good enough.

Steve Williams Tuesday, February 2nd 2016 at 7:41AM

Trump did fine in Iowa. He and Rubio each got 7 delegates, Cruz got 8.

Steve Williams Tuesday, February 2nd 2016 at 7:44AM

Hillary was the big loser.
