Kaepernick’s Protest Underlines Anthem’s Unique Role in Sports
By SAM BORDEN

The pressing question for many viewers tuning in to a preseason football game on Thursday night will be whether San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will once more refuse to stand for the national anthem.

But that question obscures some more meaningful ones:

Why is the national anthem a staple of sporting events to begin with? Why does the United States stand apart in making the anthem a part of the pregame ritual? And what does it mean to be patriotic?

Kaepernick, once regarded as one of the N.F.L.’s top players, has suddenly become its most provocative ahead of Thursday’s game in San Diego because, in a country that is unusual in its marriage of sports and public patriotism, he has chosen the anthem as the moment to communicate a message of protest.

After declining to stand during the anthem before a game on Friday night, Kaepernick explained that he was motivated by issues of police brutality and racial injustice in the United States — eliciting vitriol from fans who believed his gesture was an affront and praise from those who admired his decision to take a public stand at a time when few prominent athletes are willing to do so.

Lost in that debate, though, is that while high-level sports are a type of entertainment, few other forms of mass-consumed entertainment — movies or concerts or exhibitions — have the anthem ingrained into every performance.
Tens of thousands of theater goers, for instance, have packed a Broadway musical that is devoted to the life and times of one of this country’s founding fathers, yet “Hamilton” does not feature the national anthem. On the other hand, a game between the Cleveland Gladiators and the Arizona Rattlers in the Arena Football League could not begin without it.

For the athletes the juxtaposition might be even stranger: The president of the United States is not required to listen to the national anthem before beginning his day, but Jay Bruce must hear it before taking the field as an outfielder for the Mets.

“I don’t think it’s unusual because every baseball game I’ve ever played there’s been an anthem,” Bruce said. “I was thinking about that the other day: Like, how many times have I been involved with an anthem? It’s so many times. It’s what I’m used to.”
Historically, the roots of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in American sports have been traced as far back as baseball games in the mid-19th century, and the song became more widespread in baseball during the heightened atmosphere in this country around the First World War.

Other sports followed, folding the anthem into their own protocols and, decades later, the pattern seems inextricably linked — though it is unclear why.

Ya’ateeh, Shalom Alaikum, As Salaam Alaikum, Hotep, Hola, Konichiwa, Privyet, Hallo, and Hello To One and All!

I for one hopes he sticks to his guns... I wholeheartedly agree with him as I did Bro Muhammad Ali! ...Have we forgotten what he said about the mantra of the United States? What about the statements of Brother 'Paul Robeson?

...Is it okay to not agree with white America? When you don't, suddenly you are/become the enemy!

This brother took a courageous stand, as did Ali and Robeson (and many others), by not agreeing with what white America wants! Why can one not think and believe what he or she wants to believe? I believe that Colin is correct in what he has said about what the American flag is supposed to represent. And when it does not, it becomes a lie!

We as people of COLOR, are not seen as equals in this country, in the eyes of many white Americans...aka Chump! Some call him trump. Ask yourself, how many white sons of politicians fought in the 'Viet Nam War?' ...A worthless war that cost millions of Black Lives! They fought and died for the illegal interference/investments of white American politicians and business persons; in the affairs of someone else's war and country. Remember the "MAAFA?" White America tells you to your face, with the advent of their current advocate who has the audacity to run for president...a person who is a blatant law breaker, racist, and tax cheat! He has committed "Sedition and Treason" in the face of the American Public while not being charged with a damn thing! What do you think would happen to you and me if we committed such an act? Cops murder our young and old with malice and walk away unscathed while laughing in our faces...what do you think would happen to you and me if we committed such an act?

How many of us remember the Brothers who protested with raised fists in black gloves at the Olympic games a while back? ...The massacre and annihilation of the Black Panthers by the FBI? Remember that?

Ali told us of what The flag stood for when white America wanted to send Black Boys over seas to kill so-called Yellow and Brown Boys while coveting white boys right here in the US. Now just like Colin, I'm not advocating hatred for our country or our military personnel...I hold nothing but admiration, love, and respect for those who serve and have served! But you know as I, that there is something seriously wrong with what is going on in our country.

White America continually points out and searches for those of us who think and speak for ourselves while spitting on every thing we as people of color stand for...I know it and you know it too!

This young brother's courage has embarrassed the anti-Black culture in the face of the world and they truly resent it - big time! What is embarrassing to me is that the other brothers did not stand, excuse me, sit down right along beside and/or with him...provide him the support he needed while not asking for a damned thing from anyone!

He protested peacefully while being cursed and hated with outright and outrageous condemnation from the coach, his white and black teammates and many who hate us as a whole...making excuses for why he should or should not disobey the way things are expected to be. I say, when this country does not do the right thing for everyone, it walks the path of hypocrisy while holding onto the lie of equality and brotherhood for all mankind while traversing the world in a police mode, spewing what is wrong with other countries who practice separation, racism, and hatred.

Like Ali, the young Brother said he didn't give a damn about the money...what about the rest of the league? It's obvious if all of the Black players stood with Colin and walked out on the game, there would truly be no football, not to mention basketball, baseball, soccer, and many of the sports well loved in this country and the world at large. A report filed by the 'United Nations' condemns the atrocities of American Justice as it stands accused of blatant murder of oppressed people while having the nerve to criticize the beliefs and practices of other cultures world-wide - Go Figure!

Oh, How Soon We Forget!

They killed Brother Malcolm and a host of others for speaking their minds and truth...Marcus Garvey was wrongfully convicted and deported while standing up for the rights and beliefs of People of Color! Did we forget that?

Can you tell me it's wrong...to think and believe what's right or wrong in your own mind as opposed to what someone else has to say? Would you succumb to the whims, orders, and/or mandates of white America?

I wonder...

Thanks for posting this article Brother Deacon Ron Gray...it's a mind blower! Many would choose the money as opposed to Truth and Justice in the American way!

RIGHT ON BROTHER COLIN KAEPERNICK!

In Truth, Justice, Peace, and Love,

Historically, the roots of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in American sports have been traced as far back as baseball games in the mid-19th century, and the song became more widespread in baseball during the heightened atmosphere in this country around the First World War.

Steve Williams Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 8:18AM

On September 3, 1814, following the Burning of Washington and the Raid on Alexandria, Francis Scott Key and John Stuart Skinner set sail from Baltimore aboard the ship HMS Minden, flying a flag of truce on a mission approved by President James Madison. Their objective was to secure the exchange of prisoners, one of whom was Dr. William Beanes, the elderly and popular town physician of Upper Marlboro and a friend of Key's who had been captured in his home. Beanes was accused of aiding the arrest of British soldiers. Key and Skinner boarded the British flagship HMS Tonnant on September 7 and spoke with Major General Robert Ross and Vice Admiral Alexander Cochrane over dinner while the two officers discussed war plans. At first, Ross and Cochrane refused to release Beanes, but relented after Key and Skinner showed them letters written by wounded British prisoners praising Beanes and other Americans for their kind treatment.

Because Key and Skinner had heard details of the plans for the attack on Baltimore, they were held captive until after the battle, first aboard HMS Surprise and later back on HMS Minden. After the bombardment, certain British gunboats attempted to slip past the fort and effect a landing in a cove to the west of it, but they were turned away by fire from nearby Fort Covington, the city's last line of defense.

An artist's rendering of the battle at Fort McHenry
During the rainy night, Key had witnessed the bombardment and observed that the fort's smaller "storm flag" continued to fly, but once the shell and Congreve rocket[5] barrage had stopped, he would not know how the battle had turned out until dawn. On the morning of September 14, the storm flag had been lowered and the larger flag had been raised.

During the bombardment, HMS Erebus provided the "rockets' red glare". HMS Meteor provided at least some of the "bombs bursting in air".

The 15-star, 15-stripe "Star-Spangled Banner" which inspired the poem
Key was inspired by the American victory and the sight of the large American flag flying triumphantly above the fort. This flag, with fifteen stars and fifteen stripes, had been made by Mary Young Pickersgill together with other workers in her home on Baltimore's Pratt Street. The flag later came to be known as the Star-Spangled Banner and is today on display in the National Museum of American History, a treasure of the Smithsonian Institution. It was restored in 1914 by Amelia Fowler, and again in 1998 as part of an ongoing conservation program.

Aboard the ship the next day, Key wrote a poem on the back of a letter he had kept in his pocket. At twilight on September 16, he and Skinner were released in Baltimore. He completed the poem at the Indian Queen Hotel, where he was staying, and titled it "Defence of Fort M'Henry".

Much of the idea of the poem, including the flag imagery and some of the wording, is derived from an earlier song by Key, also set to the tune of "The Anacreontic Song". The song, known as "When the Warrior Returns",[6] was written in honor of Stephen Decatur and Charles Stewart on their return from the First Barbary War.

According to the historian Robin Blackburn, the words "the hireling and slave" allude to the fact that the British attackers had many ex-slaves in their ranks, who had been promised liberty and demanded to be placed in the battle line "where they might expect to meet their former masters."[7] After the U.S. and the British signed a peace treaty at the end of 1814, the U.S. government demanded the return of American “property,” which by that point numbered about 6,000 people. The British refused. Most of the 6,000 eventually settled in Canada, with some going to Trinidad.[8]

John Stafford Smith's music Edit

Sheet music version About this sound Play

The memorial to John Stafford Smith in Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, England
Key gave the poem to his brother-in-law Judge Joseph H. Nicholson who saw that the words fit the popular melody "The Anacreontic Song", by English composer John Stafford Smith. This was the official song of the Anacreontic Society, an 18th-century gentlemen's club of amateur musicians in London. Nicholson took the poem to a printer in Baltimore, who anonymously made the first known broadside printing on September 17; of these, two known copies survive.

On September 20, both the Baltimore Patriot and The American printed the song, with the note "Tune: Anacreon in Heaven". The song quickly became popular, with seventeen newspapers from Georgia to New Hampshire printing it. Soon after, Thomas Carr of the Carr Music Store in Baltimore published the words and music together under the title "The Star Spangled Banner", although it was originally called "Defence of Fort M'Henry". The song's popularity increased, and its first public performance took place in October, when Baltimore actor Ferdinand Durang sang it at Captain McCauley's tavern. Washington Irving, then editor of The Analectic Magazine in Philadelphia, reprinted the song in November 1814.

By the early 20th century, there were various versions of the song in popular use. Seeking a singular, standard version, President Woodrow Wilson tasked the U.S. Bureau of Education with providing that official version. In response, the Bureau enlisted the help of five musicians to agree upon an arrangement. Those musicians were Walter Damrosch, Will Earhart, Arnold J. Gantvoort, Oscar Sonneck and John Philip Sousa. The standardized version that was voted upon by these five musicians premiered at Carnegie Hall on December 5, 1917, in a program that included Edward Elgar's Carillon and Gabriel Pierné's The Children's Crusade. The concert was put on by the Oratorio Society of New York and conducted by Walter Damrosch.[9] An official handwritten version of the final votes of these five men has been found and shows all five men's votes tallied, measure by measure.[10]

The Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini used an extract of the melody in writing the aria "Dovunque al mondo..." in 1904 for his work Madama Butterfly.

National anthem Edit

The song gained popularity throughout the 19th century and bands played it during public events, such as July 4th celebrations. On July 27, 1889, Secretary of the Navy Benjamin F. Tracy signed General Order #374, making "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official tune to be played at the raising of the flag.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson ordered that "The Star-Spangled Banner" be played at military and other appropriate occasions. The playing of the song two years later during the seventh-inning stretch of Game One of the 1918 World Series, and thereafter during each game of the series is often cited as the first instance that the anthem was played at a baseball game,[11] though evidence shows that the "Star-Spangled Banner" was performed as early as 1897 at opening day ceremonies in Philadelphia and then more regularly at the Polo Grounds in New York City beginning in 1898. In any case, the tradition of performing the national anthem before every baseball game began in World War II.[12]

Was San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, correct in his stance to protest for what he believes during the playing of The National Anthem?

Steve Williams Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 8:58AM

It's a personal decision Ron, not right or wrong. I thought your blog was about the anthem's history in American sports.

Steve Williams Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 9:00AM

Lost in that debate, though, is that while high-level sports are a type of entertainment, few other forms of mass-consumed entertainment — movies or concerts or exhibitions — have the anthem ingrained into every performance.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 9:23AM

This morning on my car radio, I just heard the words "PATRIOTIC" in the connection to what Colin Kaepernick did in protest.

A Better Question: "Was Colin Kaepernick being "PATRIOTIC" in his actions to sit through The National Anthem?"

He's a football player. What makes his speech matter more than yours, mine, or Robert's?

My guess is that the 9ers will continue to play without any "racial divide".

The San Diego Chargers will celebrate the 28th Annual Salute to the Military, paying tribute to hundreds of thousands of current and retired military personnel who live and work in San Diego, when they host the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Qualcomm Stadium. Kickoff set for 7 p.m. PT.
Fans in attendance will enjoy pregame entertainment provided by the Marine Band San Diego along with the Frog X parachute team, featuring retired navy seals who will be leaping into Qualcomm Stadium. The National Anthem will be performed by Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Powell from the U.S. Navy while 240 sailors, marines and soldiers present a U.S. Super Flag and service emblems from all branches of service. Color guards from the Navy, Marine Corps and Army will present the flag.
At halftime the Chargers will recognize six Vietnam War veterans as a remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the war. The Chargers will also have wounded warriors as special guests and a patriotic fireworks show to wrap up half-time.
At the start of the third quarter, Petty officer 1st Class Steven Powell will return to the field where he will perform God Bless America.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 11:23AM

Great information STEVEN, to answer your question of He's a football player. What makes his speech matter more than yours, mine, or Robert's? Answer: He is rich and in the spot light and we are not.

Now the question on the floor is: "Was Colin Kaepernick being "PATRIOTIC" in his actions to sit through The National Anthem?"

Siebra Muhammad Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 11:38AM

I think Colin's stance is genuine, I wish him well, but this is a very hard stance to take especially in the NFL where fans are extremely racist. Black women are already going hard on Colin because his personal life doesn't really scream pro-black (he has a non-black girlfriend) and his current situation with the 49ers is not good. He can possibly suffer the consequences of never receiving a big endorsement again.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 12:03PM

Thank you for your comment Sister Muhammad and that is one point to be considered as our young highlights the bigotry and hypocrisy of many of the nations traditional leadership in this country.

Does what Colin Kaepernick makes him any less "PATRIOTIC" in his actions to sit through The National Anthem?"

I enjoy your wisdom any time you speak.

Siebra Muhammad Wednesday, August 31st 2016 at 1:53PM

What Colin is doing is no different from what Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson did during the civil rights era. Amazingly, when Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson took a stand against oppression in America, people (both black and white) were offended it, today they all love and admire Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson.

This country was founded on questioning the status quo, protesting against oppression (does the words "Boston Tea Party" ring a bell?), and fighting against an absentee landlord (the monarchy). Colin is exercising his constitutional right to express himself in a peaceful and non-violent way. isn't only protesting for himself; he's doing it for those who don't have a voice.
