A lot of Americans need a hug right now. Will you give one?

Americans woke up this morning to a different world. To some, it felt bright and full of promise. Others had to pinch themselves, disbelieving that their worst nightmare was now the nation's reality. Donald Trump's supporters, disgusted with a government they believe does not work for them, feel validated. Hillary Clinton's supporters, who were confident they were standing on the precipice of history, feel devastated. The press, the pollsters and the pundits, who for 16 months underestimated the real estate billionaire, feel humiliated. But no matter who you voted for, there is one thing all Americans can feel today: Hope. Because if you went to the polls Tuesday, it means you believe in this country. We can feel hope when Trump said in his victory speech that he wants to be a president for all Americans. We can feel hope when Clinton, in her concession speech Wednesday, assured us that "some day someone will" shatter the highest and hardest glass ceiling. And we can feel hope when President Obama stood in the Rose Garden and urged us to root for our new president, telling us "we all want what's best for this country." After one of the most stunning political upheavals in one of the most caustic elections in modern history, our leaders say it's time to unite. So hug your neighbor, be kind and respect each other as the nation moves forward. Let's get our act together.
