It's not for history that you posted it Ron. You are a proponent of division. After 4 minutes I was ready to throw up.

I'm descended from the Irish that came here in Colonial times. That's how long I've been here Ron.

Sunday, September 13th 2020 at 1:16PM
Steve Williams
Did your people come to America as slaves.

STEVE, By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves. Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

Antigua and Montserrat was a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean by the way, which is a is a region of the Americas that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean) and the surrounding coasts.

Now we have had this conversation before and I believe you said your family came to The United States to seek freedom from oppression.
Sunday, September 13th 2020 at 1:40PM
Deacon Ron Gray
On my Irish side I had an ancestor that fought in the War of Independence and also on the Irish side a great-great-grandfather that fought and died for the Confederacy. My maternal family are the midwesterners that came later from Sweden and Germany. I never said they were fleeing oppression. That's something you convinced yourself of all on your own.

The reason why I asked this question:

everything that Trump have done is on record and will be remembered as HISTORY, just like any other President of The United States of America.

Is because There is no such thing as OLD NEWS, It is called History Steve, can you say "HISTORY?"

In my school they called it "Current Events."

Sunday, September 13th 2020 at 11:32PM
Steve Williams
Did you never have such a class Ron?

Sunday, September 13th 2020 at 11:33PM

NO Steve, it was called Social Studies and that's wear we studied "Current Events." in comparison, you just got out of school and you can't remember that, MAN you got to stop smoking that BULL 💩, WOW!!!

Monday, September 14th 2020 at 12:00AM
Deacon Ron Gray
Social Studies was sociology, History was history and Current Events was Political Science and "civics". That's what you've got here Ron.

Monday, September 14th 2020 at 8:26AM
Steve Williams
Where Would You Draw a Line between History and Current Events?

I see expertise in History and expertise in Current Events much differently. I would concede that Historians have a unique perspective on Current Events as well as having a grip on Current Events helps to understand History.

I once heard that anything that has happened in the last 25 years should not be called History because there is not enough perspective. Do you agree?

Update:

Sorry, but I didn't like any of the answers much. Someone else can determine the best answer.

Does the discipline of history have any convention in determining the difference between "current events" and "history"? How do professional historians determine when an event has passed from politics and into history? Is this a matter that historians approach on a case by case basis, or do different writers have different opinions?

For example, a popular rule of thumb sets the cut off at 10 years - everything before is history and everything since current events. What is the historian's version of this rule, if in fact any exists?

A related question on the distinction between History and Politics - moved out of comments in order to preserve the link.

Things become history when historicised by historians. For what is historicisation and who is a historian see another answer at What are some indicators that distinguish pseudo-history from actual history?

The largest element of this is access to the documentary records of the past. Some documentary records are held orally, and these become accessible when people start to memorialise their own past. The largest source for the documentary record of the past is archives. The largest archives tend to be state archives. State archives make documents accessible after 20 years, or 30 years, or 50 years or never. (For example: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/20-year-rule.htm)

Some archives become open to historians much sooner. Failed states tend to be unable to protect their archival heritage, and the states that come later tend to make these open. Occasionally individuals release large slabs of state documents. Private organisations may release archival material earlier, or later. Or a failed organisation may suddenly release recent information.

Due to the role of the state in supervening people's lives, and as a direct participant in social action, state archives tend to dictate the ebb and flow of historicity. So "enough time to research a journal article or book" after an archival opening is a good guess. Say 20-25 years.

A Complete List of all High School Classes

Steve, you are running all over the place but we was talking the school curriculum. Here are the courses under Social Studies:

Cultural anthropology
Current events
European history
Geography
Global studies
Human geography
International relations
Law
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Modern world studies
Physical anthropology
Political studies
Psychology
Religious studies
Sociology
US government
US history
Women’s studies
World history
World politics
World religions

You do see Current events under the title of Social Studies don't you?

Remember Steve, Think High School courses, we are talking about the school curriculum.

Monday, September 14th 2020 at 9:12AM
Deacon Ron Gray
I wouldn't call that list "courses"; they are topics. That doesn't preclude a course classification known as "Current Events", any more than it precludes a course classification called "US History" or "Psychology", etc.

Monday, September 14th 2020 at 11:03AM
Steve Williams
Steve, each one of the courses are taught in our nations High school and Current events is just one topic taught under The Topic of Social Studies and that is a FACT.

Teaching current events can be challenging: the news cycle moves quickly, the issues can spark strong feelings, and classroom time is tight. Yet engaging with current events is an essential part of educating young people to be informed and humane participants in a democracy.

Use our resources to foster thoughtful classroom conversations and build your students’ capacities for critical thinking, emotional engagement, ethical reflection, and civic agency.

We will be releasing new Teaching Ideas and current events resources approximately every two weeks during the 2020-2021 school year. Sign up below to receive our Teaching Ideas.

Are you willing to agree that, each one of the courses are taught in our nations High school, Current events is just one topic taught under the banner of Social Studies in our Nations School curriculum?

Monday, September 14th 2020 at 3:08PM
Deacon Ron Gray
Here's a good example of a Current Events course. It's both historical and social, not just History and not just Social Studies. It has it's own unique category Ron.

How we talk about things matters. The philosopher Hannah Arendt said that the essence of being human is participating in discourse with others:
However much we are affected by the things of the world, however deeply they may stir and stimulate us, they become human for us only when we can discuss them with our fellows. . . .We humanize what is going on in the world and in ourselves only by speaking of it, and in the course of speaking of it we learn to be human.1

Yet we are not always equipped for these conversations. We may be able to share our views easily with those who agree with us, but how do we express our opinion while leaving room for someone else’s viewpoint? How can we seek out or listen to those who hold different beliefs from our own? How can we ensure that our discussions are rooted in reliable information and that we treat each other with dignity and respect while discussing potentially contentious topics? Engaging in civil discourse means bringing your mind, heart, and conscience to reflective conversations on topics that matter, in ways that allow you to extend your understanding in dialogue with others. It does not mean prioritizing politeness or comfort over getting to the heart of the matter.

1 Hannah Arendt, Men in Dark Times (New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1968), 24–25.

I pay attention to State's rights and the People's rights. The last thing I want is the Federal bureaucracy educating my kids. Look at the job they did on you.

Tuesday, September 15th 2020 at 9:44AM

Now that sad part of it all, just look at you. What makes you want to spread the LIES of Trump and you know that they are LIES?

Steve, that grand baby of yours, if in the public education system will go into a school ran by The Department of Education and the head of that department Betsy DeVosis, is a hand pick TRUMP supporter.

It is amazing that you talk against that department of The Federal Government with such contemptuousness and derision for a Trump supporter. WOW!!!!

Tuesday, September 15th 2020 at 11:15AM

I'm depending on the Education department to withhold federal funding from California.

Let's get back to my question to you Steve. What makes you want to spread the LIES of Trump and you know that they are LIES?

Is that what you think caused America's divide?

Tuesday, September 15th 2020 at 12:09PM

Wednesday, September 16th 2020 at 6:50AM
Steve Williams
Are you a Trump supporter Steve?

YES OR NO

Wednesday, September 16th 2020 at 9:41AM
Deacon Ron Gray
I've already answered in the affirmative. If my support has never wavered it means my support is ALWAY there for Trump. If my support is always there for Trump that means I am a Trump supporter. Maybe what Trump said about Tillerson applies to you too Ron.

Wednesday, September 16th 2020 at 2:01PM

Why do you follow this person Steve after all of these LIES that he told YOU?

Wednesday, September 16th 2020 at 6:14PM

Same reason I don't follow you after all YOUR lies.

Wednesday, September 16th 2020 at 10:20PM
Steve Williams
Why do you give me so much POWER over you and your decisions.

I never asked you to follow me anywhere but yet you blindly follows a man who's LIES have been proving to you to be LIES but yet you still follow him, as if he was the light, WHY Steve?

Because I don't understand.
