If a career has turning points, for Micheal Ward, it was going on stage at the Brit Awards in 2020. He was there to announce British rapper Dave’s performance that evening, and it was the first time the Jamaican-British actor had been back to London’s O2 Arena since working there as a steward just a few years earlier. “I was backstage, I knew all the security and they were all showing me love,” he smiles. “It was strange, but it just showed me in that moment how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.”
Ward has had a rapid ascent. The Bafta Rising Star Award in 2020 came after roles in TV show Top Boy and the movie Blue Story. Then came that year’s Lovers Rock, part of the Steve McQueen-directed Small Axe series, which gained Ward a Bafta nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Now he’s the co-lead in Sam Mendes’s Empire of Light, a deeply personal story.
