In nearly all the photos of Martin Luther King Jr. participating in marches, there was one figure who was constantly by his side: Ralph Abernathy. After King’s assassination in 1968, Abernathy took on the leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and led the March on Washington that had been planned for May of that year.

He also worked there as dean of men and as a professor of social studies and mathematics. In 1952, he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Montgomery. He also became the first Black man to host a radio show in that city.
