Why Rodney King and the Los Angeles Riots Still Matter
On the 25th anniversary of the infamous Los Angeles riots, we reflect on how America has resisted police brutality.

Why Rodney King and the Los Angeles Riots Still Matter

On April 29, 1992, at about 6 p.m., thousands of people in Los Angeles took the streets, setting fires and invading stores. They erupted in reaction to the outcome of a major trial concerning police violence, a decision that saw the acquittal of officers who had been caught on video brutally beating Rodney King, a 25-year-old black man. Over five days, in riots that spanned the massive city, 63 people died, almost 12,000 people were arrested, and over 2,000 were injured.

A quarter of a century later, there have been countless cases of police violence and militant dehumanization of people of color caught on camera, then dispersed to the world — but it's important to understand how the benchmark video really riled a nation.
